Position DescriptionThe Central Plant Operator, Swing shift (CPO) bears the same responsibilities of the day shift, but during the late afternoon through evening hours. According to available resources, the CPO is responsible for the operation, and inspection of all Central Plant internal systems,campus utility systems, and related ancillary equipment that supports the distribution of electricity, chilled and hot water to the campus. The CPO documents the need for, and is responsible for the maintenance and scheduled repairs to the same, which may include unscheduled or emergency repairs.DepartmentFacilitiesSupervisorThis position reports to the Manager of Environmental Systems.Educational RequirementsHigh School graduate or equivalent. Knowledge and experience in any or all of the following fields preferred: Engine maintenance, electrical, HVAC, welding, mechanical, plumbing. Must be experienced with motors, pumps, and electrical equipment repairs and maintenance.Essential Duties1. Monitors and executes daily operation of the Central Plant via on-site inspection and computerized EMS monitoring.2. Maintains, troubleshoots and repairs problems as they arise with the Caterpillar natural gas fired and diesel gensets, SCR/Urea delivery system, cooling towers, Central Plant internal switchgear electrical systems, campus 4160V distribution system, boilers, air compressors and associated piping, electric and pneumatic control valves, motors and VFD motor controls, pumps, and associated auxiliary equipment. This includes preventative maintenance of all Central Plant systems.3. Monitors and coordinates with outside contractors to maintain centrifugal and absorption chillers.4. Monitors and maintains water treatment for the chilled, hot water and engine jacket water closed loop systems, cooling towers, and pools.5. The CPO is responsible for record‐keeping and maintaining all work documentation. Makes entries in the daily electronic logbook, and is responsible for maintaining continuity between shifts using verbal and written communication and instructions for the next shift. Maintain CEMS logs, and keeping the Manager, Central Plant and HVAC up to date on any AQMD compliance issues.6. Takes equipment readings, makes amendments to technical manuals and schematics, orders equipment manufacture's manual updates. Performs computerized data entry for the equipment monitoring/meter reading program and preventative maintenance program.7. Schedules the purchase and inventory of all parts and materials necessary for an efficient plant operation.8. Schedules campus lighting and HVAC systems through computerized EMS system.9. Assumes plant custodial duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe work environment.10. Serves as field technician on Central Plant related equipment as required.11. Responds to campus maintenance emergencies as directed12. Must be available for overtime work as needed to perform maintenance and repairs to equipment.13. Must be available to work on an on‐call basis as needed to respond to equipment failures or problems associated with utility systems on weekends, holidays, or other times when the cogeneration plant is not staffed.14. Performs other related tasks as assigned, some of which may become essential to the position.Required Skills/QualificationsA. General:1. Must have strong mechanical aptitude, logical thinking, and analytical skills with the ability to share knowledge.2. Must have the ability to remain steadfastly positive in the face of adversity.3. Must be able to read and understand blueprints, schematic diagrams and technical data sheets.4. Must have good computer skills, with the ability to perform arithmetic computation.5. Must be able to keep up with due dates on paperwork.6. Must be able to perform duties with little-to-no daily supervision; self-motivation required.7. Must be able to work in a noisy high temperature environment regularly.8. Must be able to work on ladders, and be comfortable with heights.9. Must be able to meet Biola University's driving requirements.B. Education:High School graduate or equivalentC.
