Albany Medical College seeks a visionary and dynamic leader to serve as Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and Chief of Anesthesia for Albany Medical Center. This prestigious position offers the opportunity to lead a well-established department within the Albany Med Health System, which serves as the only academic health system and Level 1 trauma center in northeastern New York.

About the Department:

The Department of Anesthesiology of the Albany Medical system supports the health system, including the Bernard & Millie Duker Children's Hospital, outpatient centers and non-operating room anesthesia settings. The department is part of the region's only state-designated trauma center with anesthesiology services available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The department includes more than 60 employed attendings and 60 CRNA faculty. Education training programs include a recently expanded residency program with 32 residents, fellowship programs in adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology and pain management, and a highly ranked nurse anesthesiology program. In addition, faculty are highly involved in the instruction of Albany Medical College students in both the pre-clinical and clinical clerkship years.

Clinical Operations:

The department plays a key role in supporting Albany Med's extensive clinical services, performing:

• On average, we staff 50 anesthetizing locations.
• Approximately 17,000 operating room cases annually in the tertiary, academic medical center
• Approximately 11,500 operating room cases annually in the outpatient surgery center setting
• Approximately 13,000 non-operating room anesthesia cases annually

Position Overview & Key Responsibilities

• Strategic Planning: Develop and implement a strategic plan that aligns with the Albany Medical College and the Albany Med Health System's plans to foster innovation in patient care, research, education, and service
• Clinical Leadership: Oversee anesthesiology services, maintaining the highest standards of safe and quality patient care across multiple settings
• Education and Mentorship: Guide the residency and fellowship training programs and their leadership aligning with the ACGME and College
• Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: Promote a diverse and inclusive learning and working environment through education, fostering a culture of inclusion, and recruitment and retention of faculty, staff, and trainees
• Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work with institutional departments to foster collaborative relationships in clinical services, research, and education
• Research Development: Support collaborative research activities and encourage faculty/trainee publishing and presentation of work
• Philanthropy: Work with the Albany Medical College Foundation to build philanthropic partners to support research, clinical innovation, and educational endeavors
• Operational Oversight: Manage the department's operational and financial responsibilities, including budgeting, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance

Qualifications:

• MD or DO with board certification in Anesthesiology

• Academic appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor level
• Eligibility for New York medical licensure
• Experience in change management, system integration, conflict resolution, resource development, education, mentoring, leadership, and healthcare quality improvement
• Commitment to and experience with fostering collaborative teams and inclusive environments
• Academic experience in leading education, research and quality programs

Compensation and Professional Development:

• Competitive compensation package, including salary, comprehensive benefits, and retirement options.
