Sunrise ShopRite in West Caldwell, NJ is currently seeking a Cheesemonger/Cheese Specialist to join our team! An ideal candidate for this position has outstanding customer service skills, thrives in a fast-paced environment and loves cheese! The Cheesemonger has influence regarding product variety, stays on top of industry trends, has a robust knowledge of all things cheese, and enjoys discussing this passion with customers. This position is for someone that has a flexible schedule and can be here on holidays and most weekend days.

Job Responsibilities:

The job responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Selecting and ordering desirable varieties of cheeses that meet the needs of the store and its customers.
  • Receiving and inspecting cheeses upon delivery.
  • Storing cheeses properly to maintain quality.
  • Cutting and wrapping cheeses for customers.
  • Answering customer questions about cheeses.
  • Providing cheese tastings and demonstrations.
  • Maintaining cleanliness, organization, and safety of the cheese department.
  • Observe safe methods of performing all duties.
  • Maintain department sanitation and QA standards by cleaning and sanitizing all work surfaces, utensils and equipment. Keep floor clear of debris and spills.
  • Checks product received against invoice.
  • Orders product as instructed by the department manager.
  • Replenish Cheese product as needed.
  • Prepare Cheese products for sales and promotions.
  • Follow approved procedures for receiving, code dating, preparing, storing, and price marking, arranging, and restocking products to ensure quality, accuracy and product rotation and protection.
  • Handle damaged and spoiled products according to company policy and assist in controlling the level of damaged goods.
  • Check refrigeration equipment for proper performance regularly; report any failure immediately.
  • Utilize and maintain equipment as required by department; report any equipment problems immediately.
  • Removes trash to designated area.
  • Completes price changes as directed by department manager.
  • Displays product in an attractive, appealing, and colorful manner.
  • Be knowledgeable in and able to differentiate between all of the various types of merchandise including taste, preparation method or use, and price differences between varieties of similar classes of products.
  • Keeps manager or other designated associates informed of low inventory conditions or spoilage problems.
  • Keeps salad bowls and other displays stocked and properly turned and faced at all times in accordance
  • with department standards.
  • Monitors inventory of cleaning supplies and sanitizing chemicals; inform manager when supply
  • levels are low in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Adhere to all Federal, State and Local regulations as they pertain to the Cheese Department s operation.
  • Dress according to company policy to include uniform, name badge, and hat or hair restraint. Comply with QA hand washing standards and use disposable gloves when handling food.
  • Be knowledgeable in the company s HAZCOM program and adhere to manufacturer s label instructions for the safe and proper use of all chemical products.
  • Complete all applicable department training programs.
  • Comply with ShopRite Service Priorities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Job Functions:

The essential job functions of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Provides customers with superior service.
  • Ability to proficiently read, write, speak, analyze, interpret, and understand the English language.
  • Ability to perform basic math skills.
  • Maintain a neat, well-groomed personal appearance at all times and observe company dress code policies.
  • Adhere to all local, state and federal health and civil code regulations.
  • Ability to package, wrap, weigh, stamp, price and label cheese accurately.
  • Ability to stand, bend, twist, reach, push, pull and regularly lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work in varying temperatures.
  • Ability to work with a wide variety of fresh, dried and/or processed products, spices and powdered substances without negative allergic consequences.
  • Ability to tolerate moderate amounts of dust and cleaning agents during routine housekeeping duties.
  • Ability to unload trucks and incoming break down loads.
  • Ability to stand/walk for the duration of a scheduled shift.
  • Meet all work schedules and comply with all time and attendance policies.
