JOB TITLE & DESCRIPTION:
Standard Nuclear Inc. is seeking outstanding talent to join its team developing clean energy and space propulsion in its Pilot Fuel Manufacturing facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. An experienced Chemical Engineer is sought to lead and participate in the design, optimization, commissioning and operation of chemical processing systems to produce micro-spherical uranium fuel particles using a solution gelation technique. Aside from operation of the existing reactors, preparation of chemical feeds, high temperature recovery furnaces and distillation to recover solvents are also included in the engineer's responsibilities. The engineer is responsible for optimal and efficient operation of these systems and ensuring that health and safety as well as quality assurance procedures are fully adhered to. The engineer is also responsible for the design and commissioning of next generation chemical reactor to improve the batch volume and yield. The engineer will integrate with and work within the Uranium Processing group.
LOCATION OF WORK & TRAVEL:
Oak Ridge, Tennessee, with limited travel.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead operation and optimization of chemical reactor and peripheral systems to produce uranium gel spheres, including dissolution, solution gelation, recovery and conversion of reject material, and liquid-liquid and liquid-solid separations
- Lead design, optimization, and commissioning of next generation chemical reactor and peripheral systems – this includes managing CapEx projects involving the design, build, and automation of new process equipment.
- Optimize methods, procedures, P&IDs, and systems to measure, adjust, and monitor liquid streams.
- Follow all Standard Nuclear procedures to ensure compliance with environmental health and safety (EH&S) and nuclear quality assurance throughout design, operation, and maintenance of chemical systems
- Work with other engineering teams, facilitating integration and ensuring overall manufacturing targets are met
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering and a minimum 3 years of experience – strong grasp of chemical engineering principles
- Experience with design, operation and maintenance of chemical, mechanical, and pneumatic systems
- Experience working in industrial settings
- Familiarity with hazardous chemical handling procedures and policies
- Understanding of EH&S and QA requirements/responsibilities
- Aptitude for hands-on materials processing experience and the ability to carefully follow written and oral instructions
- Ability to take and record details and data derived from manufacturing runs
- Ability to lift 50 pounds unassisted, work at elevated heights, work in outdoor environments (heat, cold, rain), work in radiological area and an environment requiring exposure to fumes, odors, and noise
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Master's degree in Chemical Engineering and a minimum 8 years of experience – strong grasp of chemical engineering principles
- Process engineering experience in a manufacturing environment
- Strong background in chemistry and chemical analysis
- Experience with design and optimization of new and complex chemical processes.
- Experience with operation in radiological facilities within different area classifications.
- Plant start-up experience.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.
