At the Houston Methodist Foundation, the Chief Development Officer (CDO) Major Gifts is responsible for designing and directing the moves management process for the entire Foundation. The CDO is also expected to carry a portfolio of donors and engage with numerous volunteers and campaign committees.

The Chief Development Officer (CDO) reports to the President & CEO of the Houston Methodist Hospital Foundation and is a member of the Foundation Senior Leadership Team (SLT). This CDO manages the teams that oversee major, planned, annual, and corporate/foundation giving. Additionally, the CDO directs all regional fundraising, including the management of the development professionals in Houston Methodist's seven community hospitals.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Directs the teams responsible for major, planned, annual and corporate/foundation giving.
  • In collaboration with the research team and utilizing the latest analytics, oversee the design and implementation of a sophisticated major gift moves management process.
  • Enhances the philanthropic presence at both the Houston Methodist Medical Center as well as in the community hospitals.
  • Design and implement a Foundation-wide donor qualification process with annual measurable goals.
  • Manages a portfolio of donors and participates in the design of a sophisticated portfolio management process.
  • Serves as a member of the Foundation's SLT and provide meaningful contributions and vision for the overall direction of the Foundation.
  • Serves as a member of the internal campaign task force and participates in the design and implementation of Houston Methodist's largest comprehensive campaign.
  • Recruits fundraising professionals to grow the major, planned, annual and corporate/foundation teams.
  • Oversees and manages volunteer committees as assigned.
  • Partners in collaboration with the CDO over the constituent fundraising programs to achieve Foundation goals.

The CDO position responsibilities include overseeing the activities of the department staff, ensuring quality, productivity, functional excellence, and efficiency to accomplish strategic and operational objectives. In addition, this position is accountable for employee engagement, adequate staffing levels, budget development, compliance, and staffing decisions such as hiring and terminating employment, coaching and counseling employees on work-related performance, and developing and implementing policies and procedures to ensure a safe and effective work environment. This position also ensures training, monitoring, and operations initiatives are implemented which secure compliance with ethical and legal business practices and accreditation/regulatory/government regulations.

Education
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Master's degree preferred
Work Experience
  • Ten years of fundraising experience, to include five years in a people management role
  • Academic medical center and/or large university experience preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Professional handling of exposure to confidential/sensitive information.
