Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, under the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), is seeking an accomplished and visionary Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead and oversee a critical institution within the Public Health Hospital System. This 248-bed facility provides acute and long-term care tosome of the Commonwealth's most vulnerable residents, managing complex medical conditions in partnership with the Department of Mental Health and the Department of Corrections. The CEO will leverage the hospital's specialized, multidisciplinary model of care to best serve patients facing gaps or challenges in the health care continuum.In this dynamic leadership role, you will guide strategic planning efforts and foster collaborative relationships with key stakeholders, including hospital clinical and administrative staff, government agencies, and community organizations. You will be responsible for enhancing the hospital's services, maximizing resources, and ensuring long-term sustainability. With a focus on quality, safety, and innovation, you will lead efforts to continually improve patient outcomes and organizational performance while navigating the complexities of the healthcare environment. This position offers a unique opportunity to make a profound impact on public health and the community served by Lemuel Shattuck Hospital.The CEO will play an essential role in steering the hospital through its scheduled relocation to the East Newton Pavilion in 2026, ensuring a seamless transition while maintaining the highest standards of patient care and operational excellence.Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):* Provide strategic leadership in developing and sustaining an effective Public Health Hospital System in alignment with the hospital's mission and vision.* Build and maintain a high-functioning team of leaders across clinical and administrative disciplines, ensuring a patient-centered approach.* Oversee the hospital's relocation to the East Newton Pavilion, coordinating with Capital Asset Management and Maintenance (DCAMM) on construction and ensuring a smooth transition that meets the needs of staff and patients.* Manage and refine long-range strategic planning to secure sustainable funding and resources, engaging with leadership teams to maximize impact.* Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with key stakeholders, including but not limited to, professional staff, physicians, Human Resources (HR), Labor Relations, the Department of Public Health (DPH), the Department of Mental Health (DMH), the Executive Office of Health and Human Services (EOHHS), and community agencies.* Lead efforts to enhance hospital services through creative program planning, leveraging internal and external resources to optimize outcomes.* Develop and implement systems for data collection, process measurement, and quality improvement, with a focus on improving patient outcomes, safety, and satisfaction.* Direct the preparation and management of the hospital's operational and financial budgets, prioritizing resources to meet organizational goals.* Ensure hospital compliance with all quality, utilization, and risk management requirements, monitoring and improving performance as necessary.* Ensure that clinical and operational performance align with measures including but not limited to, Joint Commission accreditation standards, and state and federal regulations.* Foster an environment of continuous improvement by empowering department leaders to address workflow barriers and utilize quality improvement (QI) tools for process enhancement.* Oversee personnel management, including supervision, performance evaluation, onboarding, and professional development, ensuring staff competency and effective staffing patterns.* Act as a liaison between the hospital and external stakeholders, ensuring timely resolution of inquiries and complaints while strengthening community partnerships.* Set and implement strategies for internal and external communications, supporting the hospital's strategic goals and enhancing its public image.Preferred Qualifications:* Comprehensive knowledge of management principles and practices within healthcare, including planning, organizing, directing, motivating, controlling, and decision-making.* Expertise in supervision, motivation, and customer service, with strong skills in influencing organizational behavior and gaining buy-in from stakeholders.* Proficient in budgeting principles and practices as they relate to program management in healthcare settings.* Strong understanding of employee relations and the ability to foster a culture of diversity, respect, and inclusion.* Demonstrated ability to set and achieve goals, striving for continuous improvement and excellence.* Skilled in identifying problems or opportunities and taking proactive action to address current or future challenges.* Analytical thinker with the ability to organize information, identify key factors, and generate effective solutions.* Flexible and adaptable, with the ability to adjust to changing situations and meet evolving program or production requirements.* Experienced in organizing work, establishing operating or reporting relations, and effectively assigning tasks to meet objectives.* Capable of leading and implementing change management initiatives to drive organizational success.About the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital:Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital's services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity.Located in the heart of Boston's Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 248 inpatient beds including 95 Psychiatric beds and 29 Correctional Health beds. In addition, the Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction and House of Correction inmates and community patients. The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients.
