The National Council States Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) is an independent, not-for-profit organization through which nursing regulatory bodies act and counsel together on matters of common interest and concern affecting public health, safety and welfare, including the development of nursing licensure examinations. Our mission empowers and supports nursing regulators in their mandate to protect the public.
JOB SUMMARY
We are seeking an experienced leader to join NCSBN as our Chief Financial Officer (CFO). The ideal candidate will bring value to the team by utilizing their strategic leadership skills to oversee financial management and reporting, risk management and compliance, management of the company's cash flow and investments, financial planning and strategy, board/stakeholder engagement and leadership of the finance team and operations.
Working closely with and under the general direction of the Chief Executive Officer, the CFO is responsible for managing the financial operations of the organization and ensuring its financial health and sustainability. The CFO will leverage collaboration, teamwork, excellence, and efficiency in operations to support NCSBN's vision and mission.
This role is an exciting opportunity for an experienced financial leader to support and actively champion an organization committed to advancing nursing regulation and policy worldwide.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Financial Management and Reporting: Overseeing the organization's fiscal management, including accounting, budgeting, payroll, forecasting, financial planning and financial reporting. Ensure accurate and timely financial statements are issued, monitor cash flow and provide financial analysis to support decision making.
- Risk Management and Compliance: Managing financial risks, insurance coverage and ensuring compliance with relevant laws, regulations and accounting standards. The CFO also establishes internal controls, oversees audits and tax filings and ensures the organization's financial practices are aligned with legal and regulatory requirements for a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
- Treasury and Cash Management: Managing the organization's cash flow, investments and banking relationships. This often includes developing cash management strategies, monitoring liquidity and making recommendations to optimize the organization's financial resources.
- Financial Planning and Strategy: Working closely with the CEO and board to develop long-term financial goals, assess the financial feasibility of strategic initiatives and provide financial insights to support organizational growth and sustainability.
- Board and Stakeholder Engagement: Engaging with the board of directors and other stakeholders to provide financial updates, insights and recommendations. This includes collaborating with the board's finance and audit committees, presenting financial reports, and ensuring transparency and accountability in financial matters.
- Team Leadership: Develop and lead a high-performing and responsive financial services team, providing guidance, mentorship, and professional development opportunities. Foster collaboration and excellent client service for all stakeholders that encourages a compliant, ethical, trusted and accountable workforce across a hybrid working environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Advanced degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or closely related field is preferred. Bachelor's degree required.
- Professional certification such as CPA, CFA, or similar is desirable.
- At least 15 years of progressively responsible experience in financial management, with at least 5 years in a senior or executive leadership role (CFO, Controller) for a not-for-profit organization.
- Strategic mindset and strong business acumen.
- Proven track record of successful financial management, including experience developing and implementing financial strategies, managing budgets, overseeing financial reporting and compliance and payroll.
- Strong leadership and management skills, with experience building and leading highly-capable, responsive and accountable Finance teams.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Strong systems and technology skills to produce efficiencies in process and meet end user needs.
- Excellent communication and the ability to work effectively and collaboratively with executive management, the Board and other departments.
- Strong knowledge of and experience in non-profit fiscal management and financial compliance.
- Passion for the mission and work of the organization.
