Chief Inspector – CTDOT Highway & Bridge Projects

Base pay range
$100,000.00/yr - $180,000.00/yr
We're hiring a Chief Inspector to oversee field construction on complex CTDOT highway and bridge projects. You'll manage contractor execution, enforce quality standards, and supervise field inspection teams to ensure every structure stands up to scrutiny.
What You'll Do
- Supervise contractor activities across grading, drainage, paving, utility coordination, and structural work.
- Lead daily inspections to verify specifications, safety compliance, and environmental requirements.
- Resolve on-site construction issues and implement corrective actions as needed.
- Track quantities, field conditions, and work status for pay requisitions and reports.
- Approve materials and review testing compliance.
- Conduct and document field meetings with stakeholders, including contractors and engineers.
- Guide and review the work of junior inspectors.
- Enforce Maintenance and Protection of Traffic (M&PT) and traffic safety plans.
- Liaise with property owners, utilities, and community stakeholders to address conflicts.
- Ensure contractor adherence to EEO, affirmative action, and environmental obligations.
Required Qualifications
- 4+ years of field experience on transportation or civil construction projects.
- 2+ years supervising inspection teams.
- Proficiency in construction documentation, field reporting, and interpreting engineering drawings.
- Familiarity with CTDOT specs and standards.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
- Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) competency.
- Must have: NICET HCI Level IV, PE, CCM, or EIT.
Preferred Skills
- Experience leading CTDOT projects.
- Proficiency in AASHTOWare and COMPASS.
- Certifications in:
- ACI Concrete Testing
- NETTCP (Soils, HMA, Aggregate)
- ATSSA Traffic Control
- OSHA 10-Hour Construction
Additional Details
- Must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
- Field-based role with occasional travel and extended hours.
- A Bachelor's in Engineering or Construction Management may substitute for some experience, with at least 4 years in transportation construction required.
