Purpose of PositionAssisting the Executive Director in carrying out the functions and activities of the Office of the Director of Police (ODOP) across the U. T. System. Administratively represents the Executive Director, developing and maintaining professional contacts with internal and external stakeholders, and acts as project manager, coordinating complex law enforcement initiatives and departmental projects. Assists the Executive Director in the coordination and execution of strategic and long-term planning. Acts as a principal advisor to the Executive Director of ODOP, overseeing a range of critical functions including supervising administrative staff, policy development, special assignments, meeting preparation, and communications.

Essential Functions

  • In collaboration with the Executive Director, works on implementing and refining law enforcement policies, streamlining administrative decisions, operations, and processes, and communicating ODOP priorities and positions to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develops, leads, and monitors special projects, initiatives, and engagements, ensuring deadlines and objectives are met and stakeholders are updated.
  • Evaluates effectiveness and efficiency of law enforcement policies and practices, providing guidance and recommendations and preparing plans by which to carry out departmental directives.
  • Serves as liaison between the Executive Director and employees and external partners, managing internal and external communications to ensure effective information flow within and from ODOP.
  • Manages and coordinates the ODOP administrative team, leading staff meetings, developing agendas, tracking action items, and setting key performance indicators to measure and improve team performance.
  • Conducts research, compiles and analyzes law enforcement statistics, and prepares briefs, summaries, and special reports for the Executive Director requirements as they relate to standing, licensing, discipline, hearings and training.
  • Pinpoints and addresses core issues within processes, identifying areas of improvement and prioritizing strategic law enforcement initiatives.
  • Serves as a steward of confidential information and act as a trustworthy liaison between the Executive Director and relevant stakeholders on key matters.
  • Builds and maintains a strong rapport with System administration's senior leaders and key internal and external constituents, representing the Executive Director as directed.
  • Handles an array of matters of institutional importance on behalf of the Executive Director, including providing oversight and directing action items such as scheduling and travel arrangements.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Broad and deep knowledge of law enforcement policy and trends
  • Knowledge of principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills
  • Highly organized with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree is required, with 7 or more years of progressively responsible experience in operations, strategic planning, leadership, or related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree preferred
  • Knowledge and understanding of university policies, procedures, and cultures
  • Experience working with executives
  • Experience working within the UT System

Additional InformationThe retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to a minimum of 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. Participation in TRS is mandatory.
