Job Description :

Freedom Alliance seeks a Chief Operating & Financial Officer who will play a primary role in helping our organization to care for America's combat veterans and military families. The person selected for this position will oversee the organization's financial and human resource operations, manage a budget of $12 million, be a member of our leadership team, work from our headquarters in Winchester, Virginia, and report to the President.

Organizational Overview

Freedom Alliance is one of the most dynamic and effective military support organizations in the nation. Our mission is to advance the American heritage of freedom by honoring and encouraging military service, defending the sovereignty of the United States, and promoting a strong national defense. We are a 501(c)(3) educational and charitable organization with a national scope. With a small staff of 22 across the country, our accomplishments are tremendous.

Our program activities fall under three main categories:

  • Support Our Troops program: An intensive effort to help injured troops with their rehabilitation by reducing anxiety, repairing family relationships, and achieving the most complete transition that their injuries allow.
  • Scholarship Fund: Provides college scholarships to students whose parent was killed or permanently disabled in a combat mission or training accident.
  • Public Policy program: Celebrates America's history and heroes and helps the public understand the need for a strong military and the virtues of service.
  • Responsibilities

    • Responsible for fiscal integrity of the organization to include day-to-day finances, financial policies and procedures, legal and regulatory compliance, oversight of accounting team, monthly reports, etc.
    • Initiate the annual audit and provide auditors with the requested schedules, contracts, questionnaires, and other necessary materials.
    • Preparation of annual budget and fiscal management that operates within the approved budget, ensuring maximum resource utilization, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, monthly reconciliations, assisting with grant management, and maintaining the organization in a positive financial position.
    • Coordinate with banks, investment advisors, legal counsel, Board of Directors, and other vendors, staff, and representatives.

    Human Resources

    • Responsible for compliance with all employment regulations.
    • Responsible for hiring and/or assisting in hiring and the retention of competent, qualified, and engaged staff. Work with Executive Director on the onboarding process.
    • Ensure that employee morale, retention, and compliance are carried out with excellence. Create clear staff job descriptions and pay scale.
    • Maintain accurate leave records. Act as initial point of contact and problem solver for staff.

    Administration and Management

    • Establish strong internal controls and lead administrative staff to properly implement processes and procedures.
    • Responsible for leading in a manner that supports and guides the organization's culture and beliefs.
    • Outreach to Board of Directors for meetings, attendance, take minutes at Board meetings, and coordinate with appropriate Board members for various needs. Review and update board approved policies.
    • Review contracts, agreements, and work with legal counsel as needed.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelors degree and at least five years experience as a CFO or financial management in a non-profit organization. A CPA is a plus.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills. Strong organizational and leadership experience, and proficiency in Excel.
    • Demonstrated leadership ability, team management, and interpersonal skills.
    • Excellent analytical and abstract reasoning skills, plus excellent organization skills.
    • Value and commitment to the organization's mission and a passion for America's military and veteran community.
    • Ability to self-start and manage multiple tasks simultaneously, manage time effectively to meet deadlines, provide strategic and operational support to the President, and maintain the highest standards of confidentiality.
    • Ability to be empathetic, cool temperament, firm, kind, and fun.
