The Salvation ArmyChild Care Cook210 Splading Ave, Peoria, IL 61603Position Title: Child Care CookJob Summary:The Child Care Cook is responsible for planning, preparing, and serving nutritious meals for the children at The Salvation Army Child Care Center. This position ensures compliance with ISBE (Illinois State Board of Education) Food Program guidelines and supports the overall health and well-being of the children. The Cook collaborates closely with the Child Care Director and maintains a clean, organized, and safe kitchen environment.Reports To: Child Care DirectorSupervises: N/AQualifications:
  • One year of experience in meal preparation for large groups preferred.
  • Must have a passion for fulfilling The Salvation Army's mission and the ability to articulate and promote this mission to others.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment background check and an annual motor vehicle check.
  • Valid driver's license required.
Education:
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent, significant experience will be considered in lieu of.
  • Must have or be willing to obtain an Illinois Department of Food Services License.
  • Must meet health requirements for personnel in Child Care Centers and obtain DCFS licensing clearance.
  • Must be willing to learn proper meal preparation techniques required by the ISBE Food Program.

  • Plan monthly menus to promote healthy eating and meet ISBE Food Program requirements.
  • Prepare and serve nutritious breakfast, lunch, and snacks for the children.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of food labels in compliance with ISBE Food Program guidelines.
  • Utilize written recipes to ensure proper food measurements and compliance with program standards.
  • Ensure children with allergies receive appropriate meal substitutions.
  • Review food labels to prevent serving allergens to children with special dietary needs.
  • Communicate menu changes promptly to the Child Care Director and parents.
  • Ensure all necessary food items are available each day.
  • Coordinate food orders with the Child Care Director for approval.
  • Maintain professional communication with staff members.
  • Accommodate allergies, special dietary requirements, and nutritional needs while maintaining food quality and appearance.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the kitchen, equipment, and food storage areas.
  • Adhere to Health Department policies and procedures to ensure compliance.
  • Communicate with the Child Care Director or Food Service Coordinator on weekly supply needs.
  • Sustain a positive work atmosphere through effective conflict management and professional communication.
  • Maintain compliance with The Salvation Army's Safe from Harm certification.
  • Complete CPR, First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogen Training.
  • Perform laundry duties related to kitchen and meal service, such as washing kitchen towels, aprons, and other necessary items.
  • Perform other food service-related duties as assigned.
Position Ranking:Regular Full-Time, Non-ExemptPhysical Demands / Work Environment:
  • This position requires basic business and kitchen-related tasks. The individual must regularly talk, listen, stand, walk, sit, and use their hands.
  • Must be able to regularly lift up to 30 pounds and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires use of kitchen and office equipment.
  • Vision requirements include close vision.
  • Work is primarily performed indoors, with occasional outdoor activities for events or meetings.
  • The work environment has a low to moderate noise level.
