Position Summary At Stony Brook Medicine, a Recreational Therapy Specialist/Child Life Specialist is a valuable member of our team, who provides quality child life services to children and families in assigned work area(s) throughout Stony Brook Children's Hospital and who provides clinical services to our patient population.Qualified candidates will demonstrate superior patient care and possess outstanding communication skills while adhering to our high standard of excellence. Duties of a Child Life Specialist may include the following but are not limited to:
  • Assist children in the development of coping skills though play, recreation and art.
  • Collaborate with child life staff in development and implementation of new and effective programming.
  • Work in conjunction with health care team members to identify current patient needs and develop care plan goals.
  • Assist child life team in supervision of volunteers and facilitation of daily playroom activities.
  • Conduct in-services and training to hospital staff, students, and volunteers.
  • Cross-train in all units covered by child life specialists.
QualificationsRequired:
  • Bachelor's degree in Child Life, Child Development, or related field.
  • Completion of Child Life Council Accredited 480 hour internship in Child Life or internship in Creative Arts Therapy within a hospital setting.
  • Certified by the Child Life Certifying Committee within one year of hire or LCAT within one year.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules including evening, weekends, and holidays.
Preferred:
  • Minimum three years employment as Child Life Specialist.
  • Master's degree in Child Life, Child Development, Creative Arts Therapy or related field.
  • Dual Certified Child Life (CCLS) and Creative Arts Therapy (LCAT).

  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services*
  • Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
  • Successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen*
  • Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre-employment screenings.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Anticipated Pay Range: The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $28.00 - 35.00 / hour The above salary range (or hiring range) represents SBUH's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
