Position Description:
- The Nurse is responsible for providing health services to students during the school day as outlined by the State Department of Education and the Jefferson Parish Public School System.
Scope of Responsibility:
- Establishes a weekly routine of visits to schools.
- Conducts Health Conferences for students with special health needs and processes appropriate paperwork from the licensed prescriber and parent for health procedures and medications ordered during the school day.
- Trains staff for student health procedures and medication administration.
- Assists in checking immunization records on grades as required by the State Department of Health and the State Department of Education.
- Reviews the health and developmental history on all appropriate students, develops an IHP, notifies staff of any health needs and implements appropriate accommodations when needed.
- Conducts vision, hearing, scoliosis, and other screenings on students in designated grade levels as required by the State Department of Education, records on student's health record and refers to proper resources as needed.
- Provides Breast Self Exam instructions to high school females as mandated by the State Department of Education.
- Follow-up on all students with suspected health problems; make home visits as necessary.
- Provides health assessments for students who are ill or injured while at school.
- Serves as a health resource person to school staff and as a liaison between parent, school and health community.
- Maintains complete health records on all school nurse activities.
- Counsels pregnant students on a routine basis in accordance with local school board policy.
- Performs all other duties as assigned by the Director of Health Services.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Health & Social Services Executive Director.

Successful candidates will also demonstrate:
- Holds and maintains current Registered Nurse licensure with the Louisiana State Board of Nursing.
- Holds and maintains current certification in CPR.
- Maintains ancillary certification with the Louisiana Dept of Education.
- Acquires a minimum of 10 contact hours of continuing education in subjects related to school nursing.
- 2 years experience in pediatrics or community nursing is required.
- Strong communication skills in multiple settings and the ability to be an engaging change agent and culturecreator that can inspire and motivate.
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with an ability to use quantitative and qualitative data to make decisions and recommendations.
- Collaborative management style, with a proven track record of working with diverse individuals at all levels to drive decision-making and results.
- High degree of professionalism, with the ability to manage multiple competing priorities, while consistently demonstrating sound judgment and disciplined thinking.
Desired Qualifications:
- 5+ years experience in pediatrics or community nursing is recommended
- Previous school nursing experience.
Physical Involvement:
- Must be able to operate office equipment.
- Standing, walking, reaching, bending, and lifting up to 10 pounds is required.
