CANDIDATES MUST BE PERMAMENT IN THE FORENSIC MORTUARY TECHNICIAN TITLE

The Office of Chief Medical Examiner investigates cases of persons who die within New York City from criminal violence, by accident, by suicide, suddenly when in apparent health, when unattended by a physician, in a correctional facility or in any suspicious or unusual manner or where an application is made pursuant to law for a permit to cremate a body of a person.

Under the direction of the Deputy Director of Mortuary Services, the selected candidate will perform City Burial and Special Projects to support the Mortuary Operations Unit.

Typical tasks include but are not limited to the following:

* Performs all City Burial functions including operating the Agency's City Burial vehicle.

* Trains and coordinates a team of Mortuary staff to perform City Burial and Claim Case handling functions.

* Caskets decedents, loads City Burial cases and monitors/oversees the Citywide inventory for caskets in each facility.

* Operates Case Management System (CMS) and EDRS (Electronic Death Reporting System) for all case notes and documents (Death Certificates, Burial Permits) relating to Intake and Release of Remains including City Burial, and updates CMS as needed.

* Under minimal supervision, acts independently to perform Claim Case removals Citywide.

* Assists the Mortuary Managers in day-to-day operations as needed (training, preparing reports, schedules, statistics, etc.)

* Performs all Mortuary Procedures (including Autopsy, METT, Remains Check-in, Storage, and Release to Funeral Homes, Photographing and Fingerprinting).

* Performs all City Morgue Technician duties and Forensic Mortuary Technician I duties as needed.

* Assist the Training Coordinator to develop ergonomic lifting/safe storage practices that promote dignified removals for mass fatality incidents.

* Assists with onboarding new agency drivers and provides operational safety tips/training when maneuvering agency vehicles in close quarters.

* Assist MESORT Supervisory Teams in planning and development of operational drills, and exercises.

* Assists FLEET with vehicle servicing and maintenance, as well as special projects during operational challenges.

* Required to operate a motor vehicle.

* Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

1. A four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in mortuary and/or autopsy work.

For Assignment to Level II

In addition to meeting the Qualification Requirements described above, to be assigned

to Assignment Level II candidates must have one additional year of the experience described above, for a total of two years of experience.

For Assignment to Assignment Level III

In addition to meeting the Qualification Requirements described above, to be assigned to Assignment Level III candidates must have three additional years of experience as described above, for a total of four years of experience; two years of the experience must have been in a supervisory capacity.

Preferred Skills

Two years of mortuary experience and computer proficiency. One year of relative supervisory experience.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
