Continuation of this Recruitment/Hiring Incentive Program is subject to available funding and approval by the Manager. REPORTS TO: Route SupervisorFLSA STATUS: Non-ExemptCLASSIFICATION: Personnel System - Requires satisfactory completion of a six-month probationary period.PAY GRADE: 111SAFETY SENSITIVE: CDL - Subject to random drug testing per the Athens-Clarke County Drug and Alcohol Ordinance.Purpose of Job The purpose of this job is to operate a mainline bus or specialized van. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: picking up and dropping off passengers, collecting fares, operating a vehicle along prescribed routes, transporting paratransit/demand response passengers, providing good customer service, and performing additional tasks as assigned.Job Related Requirements Work Schedule: *Flexible Schedules / Some Weekend Work Required* Varies: the hours of operation are 5:30 AM - 10:00 PM, 7 days a week. The first route pulls out at 5:30 AM weekdays, and weekend service begins at 7:00 AM.All new hires will be placed on the extra board. Daily work schedule is provided 24 hours in advance. When a permanent shift becomes available all employees will have an opportunity to bid based on seniority and performance.May be required to work on religious holidays.Regular and predictable attendance is required.Must work cooperatively with others.When requirements include vehicle operation, responsible for the safety, readiness and operation of the vehicle and must abide by ACC's safe driving policy.Emergency PositionThis position is designated as an emergency position that requires your attendance at work under all types of emergency conditions. Some examples of emergencies include inclement weather, utility failure, fire or other forced evacuations or as determined by the Manager. Minimum Training & Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions High school diploma or equivalent required, with one year of experience in the operation of a mainline bus and/or specialized van preferred; Or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position. Experience working with the elderly or disabled is also preferred. Must possess a valid driver's license at time of hire. Must be able to obtain a valid Georgia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Permit with passenger endorsement within six weeks of the date of hire. Also must be able to obtain a full valid Georgia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Permit with passenger endorsement within four months of the date of hire.Possession of a Class B CDL with Air Brakes and Passenger endorsements preferred. Essential Duties, Responsibilities The following duties are normal for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. Operates all Transit Department vehicles including a mainline bus safely along an assigned route to meet scheduled time points or a specialized van to transport paratransit/demand response passengers.Ensures all state, federal, and local safety regulations and operating procedures are followed.Provides information to the general public regarding routes, established stops, schedules and services, etc.Conducts a pre- and post-trip safety inspection of the vehicle, i.e.; checks the brakes, tires, lights, and wipers, and wheelchair lift (if one is on the vehicle). Conducts a walk-around inspection for body damage; reports equipment defects and problems to dispatch.Announces stops (e.g., libraries, hospitals, etc.), as required by ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) if applicable.Assists in the training of new vehicle operators.Maintains contact with dispatcher, supervisors, and other drivers by two-way radio; reports detours, incidents, accidents, etc., immediately per established procedures.Maintains a clean and neat appearance at all times; treats all passengers with courtesy.Completes all required paperwork and reports (e.g., pre-trip and post-trip maintenance forms, etc.).Changes destination signs as required.Assists with ridership surveys over the radio.Operates wheelchair lift and secures wheelchair passengers as required.Assists the Transit Supervisor with opening and closing Transit facilities as needed.Operates buses for charter and special services as needed.Prepares reports, trip sheets, etc., when required.Records time and mileage for each passenger trip.Cross-trains and operates various Transit Department Vehicles including, but not limited to, specialized vans and mainline buses.Performs other related duties as required.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the Transit Department as they pertain to the performance of duties relating to the position of Transit Vehicle Operator.Knowledge of the terminology used within the department.Knowledge of various forms, such as vehicle maintenance forms, accident reports, maps, schedules, surveys, manifests, etc., and procedures and methods as required in the performance of duties.Knowledge of techniques and requirements in safely operating a passenger bus, specialized van, or other Departmental vehicles including defensive driving techniques; traffic safety laws, procedures, and requirements; geography and layout of Athens-Clarke County (including street names, school locations, etc), federal commercial driver's license regulations, relevant bus routes, and relevant unified government and departmental rules and regulationsSkill in operating mainline buses, specialized vans, wheelchair lifts, two-way radios, electronic fareboxes, electronic destination signs, and safety equipment.Ability to compile, organize, prepare and maintain an assortment of records, reports and information in an effective manner and according to departmental and/or governmental regulations.Ability to communicate effectively with the general public, supervisors, and other staff members. Ability to use independent judgment in routine and non-routine situations.Ability to handle required mathematical calculations.Ability to plan, organize and/or prioritize daily assignments and work activities.Ability to comprehend and apply the regulations and procedures of the department. Supplemental Information(ADA) MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including mainline buses and specialized vans, wheelchair lifts, electronic fareboxes, electronic destination signs, and safety and warning equipment (e.g., reflecting triangles, flares, etc.). Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. This position requires: walking, standing, bending, stooping, fingering, grasping, feeling, seeing, talking, and hearing. Requires sitting for extended periods of time. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those of medium work.
