CLASS CHARACTERISTICSThis classification supports the City of South Gate clerical needs of the assigned department. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Works under the direct supervision of a higher-level administrative staff.SUPERVISION EXERCISED Does not supervise. Examples of Essential FunctionsESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSEssential functions may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:Perform general and varied clerical support duties such as filing, typing and record maintenance. Receive, sort, and distribute incoming mail; operate a copy machine to duplicate information; package and distribute completed copies; deliver and transport mail, reports, and other materials to other departments. Locate materials and information in records and files as required to perform receptionist duties for an assigned office or department; provide basic information and directions; refer calls and visitors to appropriate personnel.Operate a computer and certain software programs in support of departmental duties and objectives. Perform related duties as assigned. Minimum & Desirable QualificationsTraining and ExperienceGraduation from high school or equivalent is required. Two (2) years of experience in basic clerical work is required. License RequirementPossession of a valid California Class C Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record is desired at time of appointment and throughout employment in this position. Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesKnowledge of: correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary; modern office practices, procedures and equipment; telephone techniques and etiquette; City policies and procedures; general office, mail processing, and customer service procedures and methods; record keeping and file maintenance. Skill and Ability to: Skill in the operation of a variety of office equipment, including computer; ability to type 30 words per minute net, operate basic office equipment, personal computer utilizing standard software; follow oral and written directions; perform a variety of clerical work; establish and maintain effective relationships with others; maintain confidential files, interpret and explain laws and regulations; deal courteously and tactfully with the public. Ability to fluently speak, read, and write in Spanish is highly desirable. Other Important InformationCalifornia Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) Pull Notice System:An incumbent appointed to this position is subject to enrollment in the California DMV Pull Notice Program. The Pull Notice program provides information on the incumbent's driving record and Driver's License status on a periodic basis to the City of South Gate. An employee assigned a City vehicle must acknowledge receipt and understanding of City Administrative Regulations covering the use of City vehicles, if necessary. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet in the office and moderately loud when outdoors.
