General Summary of Position Assists nurses, technologists, radiologists, and clerical staff in providing service and assistance to patients having procedures in the Radiology Department. Incumbents in this position may perform all, or a combination of the duties described depending upon their assigned work area and the specific needs of the department.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Prepares patient for procedure, positions patient on the exam table. (May assist patient with changing clothes.) Checks for the appropriate clinical indication for the procedure ordered and ensures patient has a written order for the procedure from the referring physician. Transports patient to and from procedure room and/or nursing unit. Escorts and provides assistance to patients going to the bathroom. Loads contrast into pressure injector per manufacturer's guidelines. Monitors environmental maintenance of department. Cleans up used supplies, linen, and equipment after each procedure. Stocks rooms with needed supplies and linens daily. Sets up trays, supplies, and saline solutions used in procedures while maintaining a sterile field. Maintains records and forms in the department. Monitors inventory of medical materials and office supplies and requests replenishment to maintain adequate stock levels Prepares equipment and supplies for processing by Sterile Processing Department. Locates equipment and supplies as needed. Acts as liaison between radiology department and other departments (i.e., Linen Services, Facilities, Telecommunications, Environmental Services) as necessary. Provides coverage at the Reception Desk as needed by providing telephone coverage, greeting patients, directing visitors, and scheduling patients for procedures if necessary. Notifies technical staff when patient wait is more than 15 minutes and explains delay(s) to the patient. Transports laboratory specimens and retrieves drugs and blood products. Participates in the orientation of new Tech Aides, transporters, and material managers. Assists with processing of Fellows and/or Residents within the department. Minimum Qualifications Education
- High School Diploma or GED required and
- with preferred additional training required or
- experience as a Nursing Assistant. required
Experience
- Less than 1 year 0 to six months experience required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Requires the ability to read and write; knowledge of grammar, and arithmetic including fractions and decimals. May require the use of standard office/medical equipment (i.e., computers, data terminal, on line printer, calculator telephone, facsimile, copier, sterilizing equipment, glucose meters, thermometers, dynamaps).
- COMPLEXITY & JUDGEMENT: Work consists of a number of moderately complex, varied though standardized tasks. Job holder makes some decisions, using standard instructions, policies, protocols and/or procedures for guidance. Supervisor is consulted to handle non-standard activities.
- CONTACT /INTERACTIONS: Contacts/interactions in own department, including multiple locations of the same, are continuous and involve obtaining/providing information. Contacts/interactions extending beyond own department, but generally remaining within SMH and/or MedStar affiliates are frequent and involve obtaining/providing information with interpretation and/or explanation. Contacts/interactions extending beyond WHC and MedStar affiliates are limited and involve obtaining/providing information.
- IMPACT ON CUSTOMER/BUSINESS RELATIONS: Inappropriate decisions and errors would usually be detected in succeeding operations within a department and/or work area (s). Most work is verified or checked, during or shortly after completion; correction may involve re-checking by others. Mistakes may result in inconvenience to, and cause dissatisfaction of patients, visitors, and/or other Southern Maryland Hospital Center personnel. Errors could result in some financial expense, with short-term consequences.
