Clinical Registered Dietitian (RD)Job Title: Clinical Registered Dietitian (RD)Department: NutritionReports To: Nutrition ManagerFLSA Classification: Non-ExemptJob Summary: The Clinical Registered Dietician (RD) at St. James Hospital (SJH) is an intermediate level position. The RD is a senior position to the Diet Technician and reports to the Nutrition Manager. The RD is considered an expert source of reliable nutrition information for inpatients, outpatients, physicians and other staff. The primary role of the RD is to conduct patient nutritional screenings for purpose of identifying nutrition concerns. These concerns may be related to malnutrition, tube feeding, TPN, special diets and physical ailments related to disease. During patients interviews the RD performs an assessment of diet and education needs and then gives a recommendation to the physician for needed care. The RD is vital in the implementation of a care plan for the patient and monitoring of effectiveness of plan.Job Results & Essential FunctionThe RD works independently to:
  • May develop and implement new nutrition related programs.
  • Work with the clinical team to provide nutritional care patients of the hospital.
  • Conducts a nutritional assessment for all patients with identified nutritional needs. Services may include nutrition counseling and education to patient and designated caregiver.
  • Promptly documents all care in currently EMR.
  • As part of the interdisciplinary team the RD attends and actively participates in all required patients rounds, care conferences etc. to share their expertise and recommendations regarding nutrition.
  • RD serves as an educator to other staff and may present classes or seminars on nutrition. RD's often teach disease specific management to member of the Cardiac Rehab and Pulmonary Programs, and other departments.
  • RD's actively has a role in our community benefit commitment. This may mean attending and presenting at health fairs, external programs and other community events.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality regarding knowledge of all patient information (HIPAA), confidential staff and system business
  • Maintaining regular attendance and punctuality is a required Essential Function of this position.
  • Responsible for establishing and maintaining healthy interpersonal relationships with all staff
  • Demonstrates the ability to work independently and exhibits flexibility in decision making and prioritizing assignments.
  • Demonstrates the ability to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with the nutritional care team and other health system employees.
  • Actively guards the confidentiality of sensitive information including but not limited to the patients, staff and the health system.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient.
  • Completes annual education requirements as dictated by registry to remains well informed on subjects affecting health care field: attends educational events to keep abreast of current developments, builds network with professionals in Dietetics field for possible implementation of 'new' ideas.
  • Maintain good standing with registry.
  • Provides age appropriate care.
  • Maintains skills needed to address the nutritional needs of patients and residents.

RequirementsPosition Qualifications Education & Experience
  • Bachelor of Science in an accredited Dietetics/Nutrition Management program is required.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience working in a healthcare setting as a Dietitian is preferred.
Licenses and/or Certifications
  • Valid NYS Driver's License
  • Registered Dietitian, NYS Certified Nutritionist

  • Certified Diabetes Educator
