Purpose

This position involves the use of CNC (Computer Numeric Control) machine shop equipment, primarily including Vertical Turret Lathe with Fanuc 10 Control, Maho Machining Center, and Vertical Machining Center (Hurco).

Input Material

Materials primarily consist of nodular iron castings, aluminum castings, some steel, and miscellaneous types.

Essential Functions

  • Setup and Operation: Knowledge of desirable speeds and feeds for various alloys. Ability to safely and effectively fixture and set up a variety of castings of different sizes and shapes. Proficient in standard G & M codes and using metrology equipment to verify work performed, with the ability to offset and edit as needed.
  • Programming: Ability to program is desirable; most work is done on castings in a high mix, low volume environment.
  • Experience: Five-axis experience and manual machining are a plus. Responsibilities include:
    • Setting up and operating CNC 5 Axis Milling
    • Vertical and Horizontal Machining
    • CMM Programming experience is a plus

Proficiency Levels

  • Level 1:
    • Experience: Minimum of 6 years.
    • Skills: High proficiency in setup, operation, maintenance, and programming. Expert in using measuring instruments and performing routine machine maintenance.
    • Quality: Very low rejection rate and capable of troubleshooting and problem-solving.
  • Level 2:
    • Experience: Minimum of 3 years.
    • Skills: Moderate proficiency requiring occasional supervision; capable of most operations and some programming.
    • Quality: Moderate rejection rate; works well under supervision.
  • Level 3:
    • Experience: Less than 3 years.
    • Skills: Learning and developing skills; require supervision for many tasks.
    • Quality: Acceptable rejection rate; participates in continuous improvement.

Physical Requirements

  • The job requires standing most of the day without repetitive motion. Overhead cranes are available, so technicians are not required to lift more than 50 pounds.

Environmental / Safety Issues

  • Normal exposure to coolant liquids, dust, and fumes; limited exposure to hazardous materials. All safety rules must be followed as stated in company policy.

Cross Training

Cross trains on all machines as directed by the Machining Supervisor.

Training

Engagement in 5S, Continuous Improvement, On-Time Delivery, Routine Total Preventative Maintenance, and submission of Improvement Ideas is required.

Education / Certification

  • High school graduate preferred; commensurate experience considered. Must pass Certification Test established by the company for each machine used without close supervision.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Experience in Mastercam on horizontal CNC milling machines and VTL.
  • Ability to program and set up 5-axis machines.
  • Knowledge of CAD software, Vericut, and SolidWorks.
  • Understanding GD&T and ability to read and interpret blueprints.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • Assist operators in maintaining production and quality.

Finished Product

Ensures the finished product meets specifications and is moved to the next position on the Traveler in a timely manner.

Reports To

Reports to the Machining Supervisor, keeping them informed of all progress and problems.
