Harlem Children's Zone, Inc. (HCZ) is a multi-site, multi-program community organization that provides a unique and comprehensive interlocking network of education, social and health services, and recreation to more than 26,000 children and adults in Central Harlem. Many of the children HCZ works with go to public schools and attend its engaging after-school programs. Whether in its Promise Academy charter schools or public schools, HCZ's high standards and expectations are the same for all its children â ensuring that all of them are on track to attend college and successfully graduate. HCZ's overarching goal is to create a tipping point in the neighborhood so that an enriching environment of college-oriented peers and supportive adults surrounds children. Nationally and internationally recognized for its early and progressive intervention programs, HCZ has been lauded by The New York Times as one of the most ambitious social-policy experiments of our time. Â The Promise Academy Afterschool program is an extension of Promise Academy day school. The program provides 500+ students in grades K-12 a safe, nurturing, and educational environment that fosters self-confidence and personal and social development. Students are exposed to various fun-filled project-based learning, developmental, and high-caliber enrichment activities, including arts enrichment (e.g., performing, culinary and visual arts), tutoring, homework help, and academic intervention support as health/wellness and physical fitness education. Additionally, students are engaged in leadership development activities, including student government, character education, and conflict resolution, and participate in several team sports and recreation activities, including football, basketball, volleyball, and soccer.We are seeking a part-time basketball Coach to work with our after-school scholars. The ideal candidate will develop all aspects of a high-quality basketball athletics program and provide scholars with effective leadership.Essential Duties and Responsibilitiesâ ¢ Develop, implement, and execute the basketball athletics curriculumâ ¢ Create a program that will include daily conditioning, fundamental drills, and a strategic playbookâ ¢ Communicate and work effectively with students, colleagues, and parentsâ ¢ Monitor and report on student progress and performance both in the classroom and the courtâ ¢ Collaborate and consult with staff on student performance in various athletic activities and schoolworkâ ¢ Maintain ongoing communication with Athletics Program Directorâ ¢ Develop positive relationships with students that promote wellness, growth, respect, and self-esteemâ ¢ Act as a positive role model for studentsâ ¢ Perform other duties as assignedQualification, Skills, and Knowledge Requirementsâ ¢ A commitment to the mission and programs of HCZâ ¢ Experience working with youth and adolescent populationâ ¢ A degree and at least two years of coaching experienceâ ¢ Must have strong knowledge and a keen understanding of basketballâ ¢ Ensure the various athletics curriculums are structured and have clear learning goalsâ ¢ Solid understanding of youth sports and safety guidelinesâ ¢ Must be able to travel to away games or eventsâ ¢ Must have strong leadership and organizational skills, excellent writing and communication skillsâ ¢ Positive, enthusiastic, collaborative, flexible, and approachable attitudeâ ¢ Ability to effectively engage and motivate studentsâ ¢ Must be able to work 3 pm to 7 pm, Monday - Friday, and Saturdays 11 am to 1 pmThe compensation range for this position is $20-$25 per hour.
