The Community Health Instructor delivers a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that promotes community engagement and healthy living.Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 21 years of age.
  • Must have a minimum of 1 year of experience in the wellness field and customer service.
  • Minimum 1 year of teaching, training and public speaking experience preferred.
  • Must complete the following E-Learnings within 60 days of hire: Group Ex Certification (ACE-YMCA Foundations of Group Ex.), Listen First Skills, Orientation to Healthy Living at the YMCA, HIPAA, and Introduction to the specific Community Health Program (LiveStrong, YMCA Weight Loss, High Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring).
  • Certification as a Group Exercise Instructor preferred.
  • Basic understanding of health disparity and resources to overcome barriers.
  • Instructor certification required for specific curriculum delivery.
  • Certification in CPR/First Aid/AED/O2 within 30 days.
  • Complete and maintain required trainings to include but not limited to: New Employee Orientation (NEO), Bloodborne Pathogens, Child Abuse Prevention (CAP), and Sexual Harassment upon hire and annually thereafter.
  • Satisfactory completion of a criminal background check and Child Protective Services check.
  • Essential Functions:
  • Support the mission, vision and goals of the YMCA.
  • Promote a professional values-based culture by leading with the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
  • Lead in a manner that advances our cause to strengthen the foundations of community through programs that focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
  • Assist with leading energizing, fun, safe, and educational classes, as directed by the Supervisor, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals.
  • Follow the specific Evidence-Based class format if applicable (LiveStrong, YMCA Weight Loss, High Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring).
  • Offer exercises suited to the population, monitors progression, and offers modifications.
  • Assist with evaluations at the beginning and the end of each cohort.
  • Establish trusting relationships with participants while providing general support and encouragement.
  • Utilize motivational interviewing and teaching approaches to ensure that participants understand their health issues and how to manage them.
  • Provide ongoing follow-up, motivational interviewing and goal setting to participants.
  • Be present at all times during workshop or group exercise session including set up and break down. 15 minutes are allocated for set up and 15 minutes for break down.
  • Participate in community events.
  • Recruit program participants including conducting presentations and distributing printed materials.
  • Maintain records of registered participants, weekly attendance records, and programs sites.
  • Provide consistent communication to the Supervisor.
  • Engage and motivate participants to be active participants in their health.
  • Follow up with participants with calls and visit locations where participants can be found.
  • Provide referrals for services to community agencies as appropriate.
  • Stay abreast of community resources to meet the needs of community members.
  • Participate in professional development training to keep abreast of health empowerment opportunities and resources for participants.
  • Adhere to the YMCA of Virginia Peninsula's Risk Management and Safety protocols and guidelines.
  • Assume other related duties and projects as needed and as assigned.

  • Ability to respond effectively to inquiries or complaints.
  • Ability to properly prepare, choreograph, teach all required classes.
  • Must be able to meet the physical aspects of the position, including walking, standing, bending, and reaching for extended periods.
  • Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals.
  • Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; able to relate with individuals at all levels and with diverse communities.
