Job Summary:

The Site Concrete Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and timely proposals and estimates for commercial construction projects, including both private and public sector works ranging from $100K to $10M. This role involves performing takeoffs, document control, cost analysis, and client relations while supporting sales efforts and subcontractor/vendor vetting. The Estimator will leverage existing pricing models and business relationships to secure construction contracts, particularly in federal and regional markets. This position also collaborates across job functions, such as accounting and field management, to introduce systems that support project teams during pre-construction and throughout construction.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Estimating and Proposal Development:
    • Review and analyze project plans, specifications, and drawings to thoroughly understand project scope.
    • Prepare accurate quantity takeoffs of materials, labor, equipment, and time requirements.
    • Ensure estimates align with the latest drawings, city standards, and client-provided specifications.
    • Analyze alternative solutions, value engineering opportunities, and construction methods to enhance competitiveness.
    • Present estimates to clients and senior management during bid reviews, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Project and Client Coordination:
    • Maintain and expand relationships with clients, subcontractors, suppliers, and public/private entities to increase bid opportunities.
    • Communicate bid information clearly to field operations, ensuring alignment on scope, schedule, and critical methods of construction.
    • Lead design-build preconstruction activities to meet high-quality standards while targeting early project delivery.
    • Participate in contract negotiations and provide support in contract evaluations.
  • Documentation and Reporting:
    • Oversee bid proposals and verify the accuracy of “take-off” quantities.
    • Generate reports for senior management and participate in weekly meetings to provide updates on bid proposals and the sales pipeline.
    • Maintain documentation of estimates, proposals, and project progress.
  • Process Improvement and System Implementation:
    • Identify and evaluate systems to improve operational efficiency.
    • Oversee the installation and implementation of new systems to support company processes.
  • Safety and Compliance:
    • Promote a safe workplace by adhering to and enforcing the company's Safety Program.
    • Assist in maintaining a stellar safety record on all projects.

    Requirements:

  • Experience:
    • At least 7 years of experience in site concrete, asphalt paving, earthwork, underground utilities, and roadwork.
    • At least 7 years of civil estimating and takeoff experience, with advanced knowledge of construction means, methods, and equipment capabilities.
  • Education:
    • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Business Administration, or equivalent work experience.
  • Skills and Knowledge:
    • Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Adobe Acrobat, and estimating software such as QuickMeasure or Planswift.
    • Familiarity with RS Means cost book bidding is a plus.
    • Strong attention to detail, with the ability to generate estimates independently and lead a team.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a collaborative team-oriented approach.
  • Client and Market Expertise:
    • Established client portfolio and existing relationships to expand bidding opportunities in the marketplace.
  • Other Requirements:
    • Valid driver's license and ability to travel for meetings and job walks across California.
    • Ability to pass a background check for access to federal installations.
