JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Conservation Reserve Program Specialist

Employment Status: Full-Time, Hourly, Non-Exempt

Location: Shiawassee County, Michigan

Security Requirements: Public Trust government security clearance

Preference: Native American Preference, FBIC Veteran Preference

POSITION SUMMARY:

Buffalo Horse Inc. is seeking a Conservation Reserve Program Specialist to support a key customer within the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service (USDA-NRCS). The Michigan NRCS requires the support of individuals capable of working independently within the organization, while understanding NRCS conservation programs, administrative procedures, and office routines.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with landowners to develop, implement, maintain and revise conservation plans that are simple and clear-cut with the assistance of a higher graded conservationist.
  • Explain conservation programs with direct guidance using straightforward narrations of facts and uncomplicated descriptions of conservation practices.
  • Assist in the evaluation of the implementation of conservation plans and their alternatives
  • Work with landowners on the application and maintenance of conservation practices common to the work unit area.
  • Assist in conducting field investigations, surveys and assembly of data needed in the development of conservation practices for structural solutions to problems with water quality, erosion, drainage, and irrigation.
  • Inspect proposed sites, determine need and feasibility of conservation practices applicable to the location, advise on on-site selections, perform surveys and layout work.
  • Provide information to farmers, ranchers and other rural residents on the types of assistance available from Natural Resources Conservation Service and other USDA agencies.
  • Professional knowledge of agency policy and operating procedures in the National Food Security Act, as amended, Parts 510, 511, 514 and 519.
  • Knowledge of a variety of agricultural and natural resource management subjects such as agronomy, biology, forestry, hydrology, and applicable elements of engineering sufficient to identify wetland signatures.

MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be able to pass a public trust background investigation
  • Requires a High School Diploma or GED
  • One year of specialized experience and knowledge associated with natural resources
  • Practical experience assisting in providing routine technical support in soil conservation
