Role Overview:

Great work/ life balance opportunity. Candidate will provide quality management and oversight on transportation construction projects by coordinating and collaborating with internal INDOT and assigned staff, design consultants and contractor industry partners. Responsibilities include providing engineering decisions and making timely decisions to project issues/ matters, ensuring project work is built according to the plans, specifications, and estimate contract documents. Integrity, confidence, and accountability a must.

Salary:

This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $75,010.00. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.

Construction Engineer:

Professional engineering license is not required for this position. Candidates who have an Engineering degree but do not hold a professional license may be hired at a lower minimum salary and will then be eligible for promotional increases upon achieving milestones, including passing the EIT exam, years of experience, and obtaining their professional engineering license.

Location:

A reporting location has not yet been determined for this position. This position will be stationed within one INDOT's Vincennes District's 16 counties: Crawford, Daviess, Dubois, Gibson, Greene, Knox, Lawrence, Martin, Orange, Perry, Pike, Posey, Spencer, Sullivan, Vanderburgh or Warrick.

A Day in the Life:

The essential elements of the job duties:

* Delegate and coordinate work assignments for construction technicians and surveyors.

* Coordinate the sampling and testing of aggregates, steel, asphalt, soils and all other materials.

* Make recommendations to management related to change order.

* Respond to inquiries from local public officials, news organizations and other interested parties.

* Ensure that both INDOT and contractor employees are performing work in a safe manner in compliance with OSHA and other applicable standards, and reports deficiencies to appropriate office.

* Maintain all files related to project in an orderly and usable manner.

* Supervise preparation of final construction records, examines and approves contractor requests for payment.

* Attend preconstruction and partnering meetings as INDOT representative.

* Meet with affected property owners in the project area and works to resolve access restriction issues, drainage problems and other issues that may arise during construction.

* Prepare and maintain daily project records and files, and oversees the work of technicians doing the same, including daily reports of materials placed, locations of work, work interruptions, contractor workforce size and composition, test results, and any other related information.

* Prepare simple field drawings or sketches as necessary to implement and document minor changes to project specifications.

* Prepare and submit a wide variety of documentation to the Final Review Office, and coordinates with the Final Review Office in the project closure process, answering questions and doing research as requested.

* Teach certified technician classes and assist students in preparation for examinations.

* Recruit, select, onboard, and train employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities to continue professional development.

* Set expectations, measure progress, provide ongoing feedback, and evaluate the performance of employees. ?Ensure work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures.

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:

* Bachelor of Science degree in engineering (civil engineering is preferred) from an Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited school.

* Registered Professional Engineers license in Indiana required; exception may be made for individuals with an bachelor's degree in engineering or a bachelor's degree engineering and an Engineer in Training ?(EIT) Certification/Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Certification working towards becoming a licensed Professional Engineer in Indiana in a lower-level classification.

* Twelve (12) months experience as a Transportation Engineer.

* Be willing to travel with reasonable accommodation.

* Considerable knowledge in computer software programs.

* Broad knowledge in construction material sampling and testing standards and Federal, State, and Departmental established test procedures and standards pertaining to materials.

* Skill in operation, calibration and maintenance of materials testing/sampling equipment.

* Limited knowledge of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), Indiana Traffic Management (ITM) and INDOT specifications.

* Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.

* Ability to maintain and complete accurate and concise reports.

* Specialized knowledge of, and ability to apply, a variety of Federal, State, and local guidelines, manuals and regulations for purposes of construction inspection for compliance with standards.

* Ability to read and interpret highway and bridge plans and to identify errors and omissions.

* Ability to delegate work, set clear direction, and manage workflow.

* Ability to effectively give feedback, provide guidance or corrective action, coach, and develop employee skillsets.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
