Job Overview

Performs duties in the operation of various types of specialized medium and heavy construction equipment and supervises assigned staff.

Salary

Minimum: $36,108.80- $46,941.44

Duties and Responsibilities

Note: The following duties are illustrative and not exhaustive. Depending on assigned area of responsibility, incumbents in the position may perform some or all the activities described below.

* Operates construction equipment such as bulldozers, graders, front-end loaders, road rollers. Performs advanced construction or maintenance work.

* Operates heavy transport vehicles such as tractor trailers, 18-wheel transport vehicles and 2, 12, and 18-yard dump trucks incident to moving equipment from site to site.

* Acts as a lead operator or supervises lower-level operators, maintenance workers, trades helpers, or laborers in the performance of construction or maintenance work.

* Sets flags and barricades.

* Performs routine service and maintenance of assigned vehicles and equipment.

* Performs safety inspections of assigned vehicles and equipment.

* Performs other related duties as required.

Job Specifications

* Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations applicable to the operation of medium to heavy motorized transportation vehicles on public streets and highways.

* Knowledge of the operation of a variety of medium to heavy motorized construction equipment and transportation vehicles.

* Ability to operate a variety of medium to heavy motorized equipment and transportation vehicles.

* Ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of others.

* Ability to perform service and make minor repairs to medium to heavy motorized construction equipment and transportation vehicles.

* Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

* Ability to work effectively with others.

* Ability to communicate effectively with others.

Physical Requirements

* Requires bending, climbing, stooping, kneeling or crouching at ground levels, standing for long periods of time, and eye and hand coordination.

* Required to work outside in a subtropical climate under adverse weather, and high noise levels.

* Must be able to lift and carry equipment and tools.

Work Category

* Medium Work - Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Minimum Qualifications Required

* Graduation from high school or possession of a GED certificate; AND

* Three years of experience in the operation of trucks with a payload of over five tons, street sweepers, slope mowers or similar medium-sized industrial equipment such as bull dozers, graders and front-end loaders, and boom trucks; OR

* An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted above; AND

* Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class A within six months of hire.

Emergency Management Responsibilities

In the event of an emergency or disaster, an employee may be required to respond promptly to duties and responsibilities as assigned by the employee's department, the County's Office of Emergency Management, or County Administration. Such assignments may be for before, during or after the emergency/disaster.
