Job Duties

Join our team as a Construction Inspector and play a crucial role in managing all aspects of highway projects. The Bristol District, which encompasses 12 counties, is hiring for multiple positions to meet our construction needs. In this role, you will maintain detailed records, engage with contractors and the public, oversee quality control, and ensure compliance with safety and environmental standards. Minimum Qualifications

• Experience in construction, civil engineering, project management or materials inspection.• Skill in mathematical calculations with ability to measure, calculate and reconcile pay quantities and to prepare contractor payment vouchers.• Ability to read, interpret and analyze roadway, structure and bridge plans, specifications and contract documents.• Ability to maintain detailed records, prepare reports and maintain project files.• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with VDOT and contractor personnel and the general public.• Skill in the use of computers and software applications.• Skill in the use of field engineering and testing equipment, inspection methods and materials testing.• Valid driver's license.• Safety shoes required.Possession of or ability to obtain required certifications within 12 months of employment:• DEQ Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector• DEQ Stormwater Management Inspector• VDOT Asphalt Field I• VDOT Asphalt Field II• VDOT Slurry Surfacing• VDOT Surface Treatment• VDOT Soils and Aggregate Compaction• VDOT Pavement Markings• Nuclear Guage Safety and Hazmat Safety• American Concrete Institute Field Level I or WACEL Concrete I Certification• VDOT Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control Safety / Flagger• Guardrail Installation Training (GRIT)• OSHA 10• CPR with AED, Standard First Aid, and Blood Borne Pathogens (BBP) Combined Course

Additional Considerations

• Experience in highway and bridge construction inspection with a DOT or consultant inspection firm.• Knowledge of roadway, structure and bridge construction methods, materials, standards and terminology.• Knowledge of state and federal safety, environmental, and equal employment opportunity guidelines and regulations as they relate to transportation construction projects.• Ability to apply mathematical formulas and engineering principles to determine minor adjustments to construction plans.• Proficient in AWP or other project management software.• A combination of training, experience, or education in Engineering, Drafting, or related field desired.• Completion of fall protection and confined space training.
