Job Summary: A Safety Officer is responsible for supporting the development of OHS policies and programs, advising and instructing on various safety-related topics, conducting risk assessments, and enforcing preventative measures. They review existing policies and measures, organize OHS training, inspect premises and work activities, investigate incidents, and prepare reports on occurrences. Their role also includes identifying hazards, ensuring compliance with legislation, and promoting a culture of health and safety in the workplace. Must be bilingual (English, Spanish).

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the development of OHS policies and programs
  • Advise and instruct on various safety-related topics (noise levels, use of machinery etc.)
  • Conduct risk assessment and enforce preventative measures
  • Review existing policies and measures and update according to legislation
  • Initiate and organize OHS training of employees,
  • Inspect premises and the work of personnel to identify issues or non-conformity (e.g. not using protective equipment)
  • Oversee installations, maintenance, disposal of substances etc.
  • Stop any unsafe acts or processes that seem dangerous or unhealthy
  • Record and investigate incidents to determine causes and handle worker's compensation claims
  • Prepare reports on occurrences and provide statistical information to upper management
  • Assist with preparing and processing new hire safety orientation paperwork as needed, including creating and providing onboarding packages with company policies; employee information, payroll, safety, and tax forms; benefits, etc.
  • Frequent travel required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English
  • HS Diploma (minimum) or equivalent; or a combination of equivalent training, education and relevant work experience.
  • OSHA 30 certification
  • Valid, unrestricted driver's license
  • Ability to pass a drug/alcohol screen and background check
  • At least one year of safety experience
  • Effective communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills
  • Reliable and punctual
  • Must have a reliable transportation and available to work extended hours, as needed
  • Ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, and manage time and priorities effectively
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Must be an effective team player with a positive attitude
  • Proficient in using a computer and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Ability to interact with employees at all levels, supervisors, vendors, and other stakeholders in a positive, constructive manner

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate degree
  • OSHA 510,
  • Industry Certification, such as
  • Certified Safety Professional, ASP:
  • Associate Safety Professional,
  • OHST: Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician,
  • STS: Safety Trained Supervisor
  • Certify OSHA Hygienist (COH)

Physical Requirements include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Able to walk, sit, stand, bend, kneel, stretch, squat and climb.
  • Able to frequently travel to job sites and meetings.
  • Able to wear the required personal protective equipment.
  • Able to work with specialized safety equipment.
  • Able to see, talk, and hear in person, via phone, and online/video.
  • Able to lift & carry items up to 25 lbs.
  • Able to pass Respirator fit test.
  • Able to work in an outdoor and indoor construction work environment with potential exposure to dust, noise, waste, toxic and infectious materials and possible inclement weather conditions.
