JOB TITLE: CONSTRUCTION WORKER I

JOB SUMMARY: The person employed in this capacity will perform his/her duties under the direction of the Public Works Director, Assistant Superintendent of Stormwater Operations or Group Leader. This person will be responsible for assisting in the construction and maintenance of the City storm water system.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
* Operate pickup trucks, small dump trucks, and tandem axle dump trucks with air brakes.
* Perform simple operations with excavators, backhoe, and loaders.
* Perform physical labor tasks on job sites.
* Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations to provide quality service.
* Must be willing to work cooperatively and jointly with crew members.
* Perform clerical functions such as answering phones, filing and performing routine messenger services.
* Perform related work as assigned by supervisor.
TOOLS/EQUIPMENT:
* Motorized vehicles and equipment, including back-hoe, tandem axle dump truck with air brakes, pickup truck, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches and mobile radio.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, DEGREES, CERTIFICATES, AND/OR LICENSE:
* High School Diploma or GED.
* Four (4) years experience involving the use of medium and heavy equipment, two of which must have been related to street systems.
* Three (3) years of road or general construction experience.
* Valid Driver's License.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
* Considerable knowledge of light and heavy automotive equipment operation.
* Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to heavy automotive equipment operations.
* Working knowledge of the methods, materials and tools used in stormwater construction.
* Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment.
* Ability to understand and follow oral or written instructions.
* Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing;
* Ability to observe proper safety precautions;
* Ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors and the public;
* Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time.
* Must have working knowledge of current traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in equipment operation.
