- Prepare and present accurate and timely financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, cash flow statements, and job cost reports.
- Analyze financial data and provide strategic insights and recommendations to senior management.
- Manage month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring all financial transactions are recorded accurately.
- Develop and manage the annual budget, working closely with project managers and department heads.
- Monitor budget performance, analyze variances, and update forecasts as needed.
- Provide financial projections for ongoing and upcoming construction projects.
- Manage the company's cash flow to ensure funds are available for payroll, projects, and operating expenses.
- Maintain banking relationships and oversee the administration of loans, lines of credit, and bonding requirements.
- Oversee job costing and ensure the accurate allocation of costs to projects.
- Work with project managers to review job performance, track project budgets, and identify areas for cost savings.
- Ensure compliance with contract terms and manage change orders and billing schedules.
- Establish and maintain internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure the integrity of financial information.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including construction-specific requirements such as prevailing wage, lien waivers, and insurance certificates.
- Coordinate with external auditors and prepare necessary documentation for financial audits.
- Oversee tax compliance and work with external tax advisors to file returns accurately and on time.
- Lead and manage the accounting team, including hiring, training, mentoring, and conducting performance evaluations.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement and ensure staff are equipped to handle the demands of a growing construction business.
- Evaluate and improve accounting systems and processes to increase efficiency and effectiveness.
- Implement new software or systems as needed, ensuring alignment with the company's operational and financial goals.
- Oversee project-specific accounting functions, such as AIA billing, retention tracking, and subcontractor payments.
- Collaborate with project managers and estimators to ensure accurate financial reporting and support project success.
- Manage work-in-progress (WIP) schedules and ensure accurate reporting of project profitability.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. CPA, CMA, or equivalent certification preferred.
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience.
- Strong understanding of construction accounting principles, including job costing, WIP reporting, and AIA billing.
- Experience with construction accounting software (e.g., Sage 300, QuickBooks, or Viewpoint) is highly desirable.
- Skills:
- In-depth knowledge of GAAP and construction accounting practices.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Strong leadership and team management abilities.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with various departments.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
