Michael Weinig Inc, the industry leading provider of wood processing machinery, has an excellent opportunity for a full-time Controls Engineer to provide custom control solutions for a variety of end user applications. From project engineering, conceptual design, control system specification, development program timelines and reports, design reviews, electrical designs, documentation packages, pre-production builds, system testing/troubleshooting, and transfers to production you will have the opportunity to be involved in the full project cycle.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Based on engineering principals, develop standard and custom electrical and controls systems and participate in presentation of the solution to the customer.
  • Project planning of control systems, including: project scheduling, subcontract planning, resource planning, budget planning, commissioning planning. Oversee project workflow and support internal and external resources to ensure timely delivery of projects, expected quality and allotted budget.
  • Work with Sales department to provide input with quote preparation as needed.
  • Participate in design/product reviews and work with Project Engineering & Product Engineering to ensure proper implementation of features.
  • Provide technical support to external and internal customers for new and existing machinery. Create customer documentation such as user manuals, programming diagrams, network diagrams, and electrical drawings.
  • Verification and validation of engineered system (hardware and/or software) to specifications.
  • Participate in the machine inspection and run off process to ensure conformance to design and equipment specifications, compliance with operational and safety standards and that machinery functions as required to meet customer expectations
  • Develop Bills of Materials (BOM) for all assigned controls systems. Prepare specifications for purchase of materials and equipment for the Systems Buyer. Maintain control of project expenditures to avoid cost overruns.
  • Ensure interface compatibility between machines being designed and others with which it must interface physically or functionally through collaboration with other Design Engineers and the Project Engineer. Identify incompatibilities to appropriate personnel and others as needed.
  • Ensure all relevant safety objectives and legal requirements are met such as; NFPA-70 (NEC), NFPA 70E, as well as UL508a and other applicable standards are met at all times.

Job Requirements:

  • Ideal candidates will possess a Bachelor's Degree with emphasis in Electrical Engineering or Industrial Automation (BSEE preferred)
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience with industrial electrical controls systems with strong knowledge or electrical and controls engineering theories and principals.
  • Proficient in Design/Drafting tools. AutoCAD and SolidWorks Electrical preferred.
  • Candidates must have solid PLC system design and programming experience. Beckhoff PLC experience is a plus. Other experience with Allen Bradley and Siemens Controllers also desired. Ability to learn new control platforms.
  • Project management experience and strong electrical and control system troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience in design, repair and analysis of electronic systems. Must have exposure to electrical engineering design principles and methodologies and the ability to create, read and interpret electrical schematics. Must have experience in electrical control panel design.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate and interact with others and communicate technical concepts both written and verbally.
  • Must be a creative problem solver that is results oriented, focused and attentive with the ability to maintain a high level of accuracy.
  • Proactive, resourceful and willing to participate in a team-oriented environment.
  • Must be able to deal with sensitive information and maintain its confidentiality.
  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to prioritize, multi-task and meet deadlines.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to travel domestically by air or car on a regular basis with the ability to obtain a valid passport for occasional international travel.
  • Background, MVR and pre-employment drug screen required.

Preferred / Ideal Qualifications:

  • Manufacturing working control environment knowledge with automated machinery using practical applications in the wood working machinery industry.
  • Experience programming robotic controls and integrating with PLC's is also desired.
