Duties for this position include promoting county initiatives and resources to partners and communities, with a focus on senior resources; is active within the community, including visiting regularly with senior centers and meeting with nonprofit partners; supports senior center managers through providing resources and assistance with programming and identifying programming needs or gaps; and supporting the department's goal of serving as a resource hub for the county's communities and partnerships.Senior Services
- Serves as the coordinator of information and resources to the county's senior centers.
- Responds to requests for new programs, events, activities, and services from county senior centers or related partners.
- Ensures that information received from the county's contracted service providers is distributed on a timely basis to the senior service programs.
- Assists in coordinating and designing activities that can be attended and/or participated in by older adults in Shelby County in coordination with senior center managers.
- Assists senior center managers with recommendations to recruit volunteers and market existing programs and activities to enhance participation.
- Assists the Manager of Community Services with planning and coordinating senior events, including the annual Senior Picnic.
- Participates in training and other professional development opportunities to remain up-to-date with senior initiatives.
- Manages the maintenance and distribution of monthly senior center events calendar to residents.
Resources Coordination & Promotion
- The Community Services Department serves as a hub of information on community services for the general population, as well as programs and services available to older adults.
- Serves as a liaison between the county, senior centers, nonprofits, and other related entities as well as state departments to help streamline communication, establish collaboration opportunities, and facilitate discussions regarding community needs, especially in regard to senior citizens, and provide suggestions how to meet those needs.
- Makes necessary referrals to residents to connect them to resources and services they need.
- Represents Community Services department in the absence of the Manager at meetings and events when requested or as needed.
Community Outreach
- Promotes public awareness of senior programs and issues and encourages maximum participation in available programs.
- Develops and maintains partnerships/relationships with county departments and community agencies for ongoing social services programming countywide.
- Attends and represents Community Services department and county at community events.
- Works with Manager of Community Services to determine new events to attend and/or host to educate the public about community services resources and initiatives.
Grant Program Implementation
- Coordinates with the Manager of Community Services and Grants Management department to facilitate and implement the department's Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) program and other state or federal grant awards as applicable.
- Develops relationships with nonprofits involved with grant awards to streamline communication and implementation efforts.
- Collaborates with department staff to acquire information from partners for invoices, grant reporting, and related compliance measures.
- Assists Manager of Community Services with the implementation of the Community Services Grant program.
Higher Education Program Development & Implementation
- Builds relationships with local nonprofits, high schools, and two-year & four-year institutions to develop internship programming available for Shelby County students.
- Serves as a liaison between participating nonprofits and educational partners for the implementation of programming.
- Coordinates scheduling and conducting interviews for student applicants for the program(s).
- Provides supervision and evaluation of student participants throughout the implementation of the program(s).
- Performs all duties in a safe and efficient manner.
- Performs all other duties as assigned by supervision.
Qualifications and RequirementsMinimum Requirements
- Bachelor degree in public administration, health or human services, social work, communications, or related curriculum.
- 1-3 years of experience in social services, event coordination and planning, or related fields.
- Working knowledge of software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Canva.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organization and office skills.
- Ability to multitask and handle various operations simultaneously.
- Valid driver's license.

- Bilingual Spanish/English to communicate effectively with Spanish-speaking residents through both oral and written communications.
