Job Description :
The Corporal maintains order and directs daily operations of the County Jail by supervising, planning, coordinating, and directing the work of jail staff in the custody, security, and transportation of inmates during assigned shift. This position supervises, trains in new methods and procedures, coaches and mentors, enforces policies, rules, and regulations, and evaluates work performance of jail staff. * Actively observes Correctional Officers from stations or by patrolling cell blocks, corridors, dormitories, or work areas to maintain order, safety, and security; serves as back up to Sergeant for investigating allegations of misconduct involving subordinates. * Illustrates effective motivational leadership to provide daily guidance and direction to jail staff; monitors workload, delegation of assignments, and other personnel matters affecting staff; prepares and examines shift schedules and time off requests to maintain appropriate staffing levels when requested; identifies and analyzes staff problems and recommends or implements solutions; conducts inspections of staff, equipment, and documentation of activities; serves as back up to Correctional Officers for all daily functions to include post coverage in the event that a Correctional Officer is unable to. * Assists staff in performance of duties and performs duties of subordinate staff; provides consultation to staff on routine matters, such as interpretation of rules, and provides guidance in handling difficult and sensitive situations; provides supervisory officers with information required to evaluate operations and efficiency. * Applies knowledge of jail standards, procedures, rules, and regulations to assist in monitoring work performance and training progress of individuals, in person and through documentary review, to ensure execution of orders, adherence to work procedures, and compliance with legal requirements; provides ongoing training to staff in procedures, techniques, documentation, and other necessary activities. * Applies ability to observe and accurately interpret individuals' mental and physical conditions and behavior to supervise inmate population; verifies health and welfare of inmates, reviews inmate special needs and recommends appropriate referrals, housing, and precautions. * Adapts agile customer service skills to effectively communicate with inmates; answers and resolves inmates special requests and grievances. * Exercises organizational and attention to detail skills to support a safe environment for inmates; reviews rosters, logs, behavior sheets and other paperwork related to documentation of inmate's time in jail; ensures prisoner rights; verifies inmate count, key count, and monetary fund balances; conducts on-site inspections of staff and inmates. * Effectively communicates concerns, incidents, and other non-routine matters and receives orders with Lieutenant, Captain, and/or other supervisors. * Executes acute thinking to take control of emergency situations; coordinates and respond to alarms; reviews incident reports for follow-up and referral. * In the absence of the Sergeant, exercises delegated authority and responsibilities of that position. * Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with a wide variety of people; serves as back up to Sergeant for participation in meetings with departmental personnel, outside agencies, and other County departments. * Maintains current knowledge of professionally related matters. * Performs other related duties as required or assigned. * High school diploma or equivalent * Three (3) years of full-time experience as a certified law enforcement or corrections officer. *
  • Citizen of the United States. * Appointment will be conditional upon successful completion of a criminal background check resulting in no felony convictions in any jurisdiction unless the judgment or conviction has been reversed or a complete pardon has been granted. * Fingerprinting to be kept on file for identification purposes. * Position will be subject to pre-hire, random, and post-accident drug and alcohol testing during the course of employment. * Position will require a pre-employment physical. * Position will require a psychological examination. * Possess and maintain a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record. * Possess Wisconsin Jail Officer Certification or obtain certification within twelve (12) months of hire and maintain certification thereafter. * As a condition of continued employment, attend 24 hours of annual ongoing training in law enforcement/corrections. * Associate degree or a minimum of 60 college credits in criminal justice, business or public administration, corrections, law enforcement, criminology, social/behavior sciences, or a related field. * Training or experience in practices and principles of supervision. * Ability to fluently speak Spanish, sign language, or other foreign language as a secondary language. * CPR/First Aid Certification. * Paid or volunteer experience with a professional organization that provides training in a relevant service-related field.
