In order to beconsidered for employment, certain minimum requirements must be met. To behired, applicants must be:

  • at least 19 years old
  • have a high school or equivalent diploma
  • must reside in Ascension Parish or living in contiguous parishes
  • must be a registered voter
Other factors whichstrongly influence the employment process are previous workexperience, previous law enforcement experience, two years or more of collegeeducation, a clear driving record, no history of prior criminal activity, and aresponsible credit history. SUMMARY Corrections Deputiestake the first line responsibility for the care, custody, and security ofinmates. ESSENTIAL DUTIES ANDRESPONSIBILITIES The most important andessential job function of the position is to have an attitude of service toothers. Attitude is essential to maintain positive relationships withco-workers, respond professionally, calmly, and politely to members of the community,work as a team member, function under pressure, and respond in a professionalmanner to supervision. Other duties and responsibilities are listedbelow. • Participate in secureand safe inmate movements and activities • Assist and monitorserving meals to inmates • Provide or obtainmedical aid to inmates, based on training • Operate and work housingfloors, control centers, intake, and property sections • Interact professionallywith inmates and supervise inmate housing units • Respond professionallyto inmate requests, concerns, and emergencies • Conduct headcounts • Guard inmates in medicalfacilities • Transport inmates toother facilities • Document and properlymaintain all related work logbooks and entries • Know and followinstitutional policies and procedures • Other duties as directedby a supervisor SUPERVISORYRESPONSIBILITIES This job has nosupervisory responsibilities. QUALIFICATIONS The requirements listedbelow are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability required toperform the duties of a Corrections Deputy. Write reports, composeor reply to emails, and complete Office forms. Effectively communicatewith inmates, the public, and members of this Office. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to add,subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers,common fractions, and decimals. COMPUTER SKILLS Basic computer skills,such as word processing, email, and ability to use criminal justice databases. REASONING ABILITY Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagramform. Ability to deal with complex problems involving several variables. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES,REGISTRATIONS Valid Louisiana driver'slicense for transportation duties. Obtain and maintain allCorrections Deputy certifications required by the Office. There must be no evidence of problemswith drugs, alcohol, or other addictive behavior or the necessity forpsychotropic medications that would affect the employee's ability to performthe essential functions of this job.
