Jail responsibilities include ensuring the security and safety of prisoners, visitors, and the facility including: directing maintenance of secure, safe and sanitary conditions; treating prisoners and visitors with firmness and fairness; protecting and ensuring the personal rights and safety of prisoners; and proper documentation and records of activities. Other duties must be performed as assigned by the Jail Administrator, Chief Deputy Sheriff, and/or the Sheriff.THIS VACANCY WILL FILL THE 6 PM TO 6 AM SHIFT.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs all duties as outlined in the Corrections job description
- Performs supervision for the day-to-day operations of the jail in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws throughout the department
- Directs and supervises subordinate corrections enforcement personnel
- Provides leadership to subordinate employees by providing purpose, direction, and motivation
- Fosters positive attitudes among all department employees
- Coordinates and records training
- Inspects, approves, and reassigns the work of subordinate employees
- Confers regularly with Jail Administrator and/or other supervisors to communicate concerns and receive orders
- Exercises delegated authority and responsibilities of position in the absence of the Jail Administrator
- Determines status of activities continuing from previous shifts; reviews activity log
- Uses independent judgment and established protocol to determine priorities of work activities
- Ensures adherence to procedures and schedules for meals, laundry, cleaning, maintenance, inspection, and prisoner activities
- Prepares and reviews records, reports, forms and other activity documentation for accuracy, correcting, and/or discussing problem areas with staff or inmates
- Maintains current knowledge of professionally-related matters regarding the jail operations
- Assists staff in performance of all duties; provides consultation to staff on routine matters, such as interpretation of rules, and provides guidance in handling difficult and sensitive situations
- Transmits orders and makes work assignments in assigned shifts
- Assists, monitors and coordinates the training of all corrections staff
- Monitors overall work load and assigns duties to staff on an ongoing basis to provide adequate coverage for division responsibilities
- Provides supervision to assigned subordinate staff to ensure execution of orders, adherence to work procedures and compliance with legal requirements in the absence of the Jail Administrator
- Develops work schedules; authorizes leave, vacation, and overtime; conducts performance evaluations, participates in disciplinary matters and recruitment procedures
- Maintains and supervises staff regarding inmate accounts, fees, and bonds
- Ensures that housing protocols are met and are in compliance with classification systems
- Coordinates and schedules transports of inmates
- Reviews booking files and calculates release dates
- Completes reports and required documentation per department policy in an accurate and timely manner
- Maintains up-to-date job knowledge, certifications, licenses and registrations.Keeps up to date on laws, rules, and regulations.Recommends policy/procedure changes to supervisor

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Directly supervises and evaluates subordinate jail personnel
- Responsible for the overall supervision, direction and coordination of the Sheriff's Office personnel in the absence of the Jail Administrator in accordance of the chain of command
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- High School Diploma or equivalent; Associate's Degree or a minimum of 60 college credits in police science or related field preferred
- Three (3) years' experience as a certified corrections officer or law enforcement officer
- Management/supervisory experience preferred
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
- Possess and maintain valid Wisconsin Driver's license and have access to transportation suitable to complete necessary work out of the office
- Valid Wisconsin Corrections Officer Certification (or obtain within mandatory time limits)
