Job Description Location: New York, NY The New Yorker seeks qualified applicants for an in-house attorney position at its office in New York. The Counsel position will assist the general counsel in providing legal advice and pre-publication review to all departments at the magazine. Responsibilities
- Under the supervision of the general counsel, conduct pre-publication review of content published by The New Yorker, including by the print, Web, podcast, photo, and video departments, on a wide range of legal issues, including copyright, trademark, privacy, and defamation;
- Advise staff on newsgathering issues, including access and FOIA and FOIL requests;
- Handle agreements involved in the production of live events, including The New Yorker Festival, and other general transactional work;
- Other duties may be assigned.
Skills and Qualifications The ideal candidate is a currently practicing attorney with these skills, attributes, and experiences:
- Practiced law for a minimum of three to five years in-house and/or at a law firm, preferably in a litigation department
- Strong writing, negotiating, and other communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Detail- and solution-oriented
- Able to work in a deadline-oriented business and handle multiple priorities simultaneously
- Strong organizational skills
- Able to work under pressure and handle work-related stress
- Uphold the highest professional and ethical standards
Education and Licensure Required - Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university
- Juris doctor degree; licensed to practice law in New York State
Additional Aspects: - Strong interest in media, art, literature and news required, familiarity with The New Yorker a plus
The expected base salary range for this position is from $140,000 - $160,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant skills, training, experience, and education.
