Job DetailsJob Location: City of Wheeling - WHEELING, WVPosition Type: Part TimeEducation Level: High SchoolSalary Range: UndisclosedJob Shift: AnyDescriptionCROSSING GUARDThe Crossing Guard will support the ensure the safety of students in properly assisting with traffic and pedestrian crossing at the assigned location.Essential Functions: (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.)Tasks:* Direct pedestrians and students across streets after assessing traffic flow to identify breaks to allow for visibility and safe crossing* Communicate crossing rules and regulations to students and ensure their understanding for optimal safety.* Maintain a crossing area that is free of hazards, and employ the appropriate tools and equipment, including lights, flags and hand signals.* Identify drivers who are speeding or driving carelessly and notify authorities by documenting their license plate number.* Vigilantly watch for impending dangers to develop effective solutions before an accident occurs.* Report the unsafe behavior of students to school officials to reduce the risk of someone getting hurt while crossing or waiting to cross a street.Knowledge, Skills, and Other Characteristics:* Knowledge of the principles, practices, and methods of public relations.* Knowledge of proper English usage, grammar, vocabulary, spelling, and punctuation.* Skill in listening well and communicating effectively with diverse members of the public having variation of education, socioeconomic status, and values.* Skill in using initiative and independent judgement while at the same time recognizing when it is appropriate to refer matters to the supervisors attention.* Skill in organizing and prioritizing workload and managing multiple projects at the same time.* Skill in assessing and assigning priorities to problems and work assignments when confronted with several pressing demands at one time.* Skill in interpreting and assessing situations, issues, and concerns.* Skill in the application of communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public, sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.* Skill in ensuring that information is properly identified and/or accurately reported.Mental and Physical Abilities: Mental and physical work efforts that include working during inclement weather and standing for long periods of time. Serving the public and responding to individuals as needed. Physical requirements include standing for long periods of time, visual acuity, eye/hand coordination and moving light (0 - 25 lbs.) of material short distances on occasion.QualificationsQualifications:* High school diploma or GED.* Social perceptiveness and strong eyesight.FLSA Status: Non-exempt$10 hourly rate
