Company DescriptionJob DescriptionSummary: As a Queens University crossing guard, you will safely escort pedestrians and remind motorists of local traffic laws and regulations. You can develop important professional competencies, such as communication, listening, attentiveness and problem-solving skills, that are valuable in many scenarios. If you are someone who appreciates helping others and understands the importance of being detail oriented, this job could be just what you are looking for. This is a temporary position expected to continue through December 14, 2024.The Crossing Guard reports directly to the Chief of Police. This position is not exempt from provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is eligible to earn overtime pay or compensatory time off for additional hours worked. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:
  • Direct pedestrians across street after assessing traffic flow to identify breaks to allow for visibility and safe crossing
  • Understand the traffic laws, signs and speed limits posted within a designated jurisdiction to effectively guide vehicles and people
  • Communicate crossing rules and regulations to students, faculty and staff and ensure their understanding for optimal safety
  • Maintain a crossing area that is free of hazards.
  • Identify drivers who are speeding or driving carelessly and notify authorities by documenting their license plate number
  • Vigilantly watch for impending dangers to develop effective solutions before an accident occurs
  • Report the unsafe behavior of students, faculty and staff to school officials to reduce the risk of someone getting hurt while crossing or waiting to cross a street
  • Ability to deal with the public and respond to inquiries in a tactful and courteous manner.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Non-Essential Duties:
  • Other duties and special projects may be assigned to meet department and University needs.
QualificationsExperience, Knowledge and Skills Required:
  • Social perceptiveness and strong eyesight
  • Keen understanding of local traffic laws and regulations
  • Familiarity with directing traffic and using hand signals
  • Physical stamina
  • High school diploma or equivalent degree

    • Turns head and body to observe traffic approaching a crosswalk.
    • Lifts both feet over the curb and steps off the curb, walks on snow, ice, uneven pavement, can react and move quickly to avoid vehicles.
    • Able to observe vehicles and pedestrians, read signs, and recognize potentially dangerous traffic situations and environmental hazards such as potholes, ice, and sidewalk obstructions and meet the specified vision requirements.
    • Able to recognize vehicles approaching from any direction, backup alarms, and horns; to hear pedestrians speaking in a potentially noisy, distracting environment.
    Work Conditions
    • Will be required to work in adverse weather conditions.
    • May be required to stand on foot post for long periods of time.
    • May be required to run certain distances in emergency situations
