Job Summary

Works with the Custodial Supervisor to supervise, coordinate, provide leadership, Development of an effective team of custodial personnel, and participates in the care, cleaning, and general housekeeping of all Housing and Residence Life buildings. Assist the custodial supervisor in ensuring that all assigned tasks are completed. Uses proper methods and materials in cleaning and care for the assigned areas and equipment. This position is considered essential personnel and will require storm duty and emergency call-out.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

* Provides leadership and instruction to small groups of custodians by leading or directing custodial activities during scheduled work periods by the supervisor.

* Conducts inspection of assigned areas to ensure completion of work assignments. Works with employees to ensure that assigned areas work orders and other complaints are completed in a timely manner. Ensures that the custodians have the proper materials and supplies in the buildings to do the jobs effectively. Works with staff to make changes in assigned areas schedules to ensure that areas are serviced in a timely manner. Carries out responsibilities in a timely, fair and objective manner. Acts as team lead when the Custodial Supervisor is out.

* Discusses general custodial procedures with personnel of the assigned areas implements changes in procedures of chemicals and supplies. Maintains knowledge of materials and supplies used in cleaning buildings. Must be able to show knowledge of and train employees on equipment commonly used in residence hall cleaning. Examples include: auto scrubbers, wet vacuum, carpet extraction, pressure washers, etc.

* Helps the custodial supervisor and lead person when responding to emergency situations during and after hours. Emergency situations may include; property damage, personal injury, flooding, water leaks, overflowing restroom fixtures, broken windows/door glass, and accidents resulting in the appearance of bodily fluids (blood, vomit, waste and urine).

* Makes work assignments in accordance with predetermined schedules, reviews the work of employees and assists in training of new personnel. Trains, organizes, schedules and assigns work routines to a large group of employees.

* Works from oral and written instruction to make immediate changes in the work program to meet modification of services desired and performs other duties as assigned. Receives and disposes of variety of complaints and expedites for service.

* Sweep, mop and scrub floors; dust and clean surfaces; washes windows, walls, blinds, trash cans, air conditioning grills/vents and glass doors. Cleans rooms, replenishes supplies and cleans drinking fountains. Cleans and polishes as needed. Assists with taking out trash, compacting dumpsters, etc. Makes sure the entrances and exits of the assigned areas are clean. Clean other areas as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

One year certificate from college or technical school; or 3 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience; Driver's License Required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

* Knowledge of University policies and procedures, professional standards and regulations, safety requirements and a knowledge of basic first aid.

* Knowledge of cleaning techniques and procedures, and the use of custodial materials, tools, equipment, and chemicals.

* Skill in managing ones' own time and the time of others while monitoring/assessing the performance of self, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action.

* Skill in the operation of office equipment including, but not limited to, multiline telephone, typewriter, calculator, multi-function printer/copy/scan/fax machine and computer as well as computer applications including spreadsheet, database, and word processing software.

* Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure and the ability to react and respond quickly and calmly in emergency situations.

* Ability to establish and maintain a good rapport with university faculty and staff, students, and the general public.

* Ability to work successfully as a member of a team and independently with moderate supervision.

* Skill in material resources management through obtaining and seeing to the appropriate use of equipment, facilities, and materials needed to do certain work.

* Ability to obtain a driver's license prior to employment.

* Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.

* Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.

Preferred Qualifications

Prefer 4 years of work experience in similar or related field of work, familiarity with computer based time clock and familiarity with maintenance work order systems.
