School employees | Washington State Health Care Authority JOB SUMMARY: The job of Custodian is done for the purpose of maintaining an attractive, sanitary and safe facility; providing adequate arrangements for meetings, classroom activities and events; and minimizing property damage, loss and liability exposure ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Upholds board policies and follows administrative procedures
- Arranges furnishings and equipment for the purpose of providing adequate preparations for meetings, classroom activities and events
- Cleans school facilities (i.e. classrooms, offices, multipurpose rooms, grounds, etc.) as described in the Custodial Handbook for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe and attractive environment
- Delivers variety of items (e.g. supplies, mail, packages, furniture, etc.) for the purpose of distributing the materials to the appropriate parties
- Informs students, other site personnel and supervisor for the purpose of providing information regarding activities, safety and/or proper maintenance of facilities
- Secures facilities and grounds for the purpose of minimizing property damage, loss and liability and ensuring safety at work site
- Performs minor maintenance and repairs (i.e. replace faulty light switches, light bulbs or fluorescent globes; open plugged drains using snake or plumbers friend ; replace washers in faucets and valves; spot paint; re- glue loose tile and wall coverings; remove graffiti) for the purpose of maintaining a safe working environment
- Inspects school or district facilities for the purpose of ensuring that the site is suitable for safe operations, maintained in an attractive and clean condition, and/or identify necessary repairs due to vandalism, equipment breakage, weather conditions, etc.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
- Repairs furniture and equipment for the purpose of ensuring that items are available and in safe working condition.
- Requests equipment and supplies for the purpose of maintaining inventory and ensuring availability of items as needed to properly maintain facilities.
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Assists in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations, and board policies.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Skills to use cleaning agents; supplies and equipment; perform basic math to calculate accurate dilution of cleaning agents.
- Knowledge of methods and use of cleaning materials, equipment and supplies, and safe work practices, including MSDS requirements. Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of heating and thermostatic control systems and how to cope with electrical and plumbing emergencies.
- Ability to stand for prolonged periods, follow oral and written instructions, adhere to safe work practices, work independently with minimal supervision, perform a variety of tasks, adjust to flexible assignments often with short notice, work varying shifts as needed, and communicate with students, staff and parents.
- Significant physical abilities include lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling, stooping, reaching/handling, near/far visual acuity/depth perception.
- Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required:
- Valid Driver's License (or evidence of equivalent mobility) and evidence of insurability, Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance, valid First Aid & CPR cards

- Must have and maintain a phone and be willing to respond to off-hour emergency calls; must have reliable means of transportation; must have excellent moral character and be able to get along with staff, students and adults; must present a positive public image, maintain a neat, clean personal appearance, wear clothing appropriate to tasks being performed, and have regular and consistent work attendance.
EDUCATION:
- High school diploma and/or equivalent; prior job related experience with increasing levels of responsibility in a school or institutional setting preferred.
