We especially encourage women, people of color, members of the LGBTQ+ community, veterans, and people with disabilities to apply.Position Title Custodian Position Number 899687 School/Division Facilities and Operations Department Facilities and Operations, Campus Operations Full-Time or Part-Time Full-Time Description Reporting to the Assistant Director of Custodial Services, the Custodian performs custodial and set up duties in accordance with Hofstra University standards and procedures. Hours and area assignment may be seasonally adjusted. Works overtime as required by the CBA for events, project work, snowstorms, maintenance, and campus emergencies.Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Sweeps, mops, and scrubs floors, stairs, and other surfaces inside and outside buildings.
  • Uses light and heavy (commercial type) floor machines and attachments.
  • Scrubs, strips, waxes, and polishes floors using heavy (industrial type) powered scrubbers and buffers.
  • Vacuums rugs in offices and public areas. Shampoos rugs periodically using heavy vacuum cleaner and rug shampooing machine.
  • Cleans and dusts furniture, exhibit cases, pictures, door trim, and whiteboards.
  • Polices outer building entranceways for litter.
  • Washes windowsills and all interior and ground level exterior glass as required.
  • Washes and/or cleans interior wall spaces, working on a 6' ladder as required.
  • Replaces lights utilizing a 6' ladder.
  • Cleans, sanitizes, and polices lavatories, toilet rooms, showers, and rest rooms.
  • Performs Blood-Borne Pathogen cleanups as required.
  • Collects and places trash and debris in containers or plastic bags, places trash in outdoor collection area for removal. May be required to pick-up, lift, and empty containers into dumpsters that are 4 1/2 feet above ground level.
  • Replaces liners in wastebaskets and trash containers.
  • Moves heavy furniture, supplies, and miscellaneous equipment as directed or required.
  • Reads reports, diagrams, and performs equipment and furniture set-ups/breakdowns.
  • Reports building items that need repair (doors, door checks, furniture, lights, faucets, etc.).
  • Polices entranceways to building for trash. Sweeps or shovels snow from steps and walks at building entrances.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Minimum three years of commercial custodial experience required.
  • Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.
  • Must possess ability to repeatedly bend, stoop, and lift at least 50 pounds.
  • Work overtime as business needs require for events, projects, snowstorms, and campus emergencies.
  • Must be able to communicate in English and interact effectively with a broad range of co-workers, staff, students, and visitors.
  • Ability to read and understand work orders, R25 reports and set-up diagrams, Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and other work-related documents is required.
  • Requires good knowledge of cleaning and safety procedures.
  • Experience working with a wide range of commercial custodial equipment.
  • Must possess the ability to work independently without close supervision.
