Position Type: Maintenance/Custodial - Support Staff/Custodian - DayDate Posted: 11/6/2024Location: Frederick Douglass Elementary School(High-Needs School)Date Available: 11/19/2024Closing Date: 11/16/2024Custodian (Night Shift) Frederick Douglass Elementary REPORTS TO: School Chief Custodian JOB GOAL: To assist in the maintenance, housecleaning, and supervision of the assigned school, insuring operating excellence in order that full educational use of the building/areas may be made at all times. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Demonstrated ability to read, write, and do simple mathematics
  • Excellent work history
  • Must successfully complete State of Delaware custodial training courses/
  • Valid driver's license
  • Demonstrated aptitude and competence for assigned responsibilities
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to physically lift up to at least 50 pounds
  • Demonstrated trustworthiness, honesty, and dependability
  • Ability to work independently and without close supervision
  • Demonstrated attitude of congeniality with strong interpersonal skills in dealing with students and adults
  • Ability to work a flexible work schedule
  • Neat and clean personal and professional appearance on the job
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assumes ultimate responsibility for respective building and supervision of staff when his/her custodial building chief is not present or available (days-evenings-weekends-holidays-emergencies), including but not limited to, proper operation of mechanical equipment, security of the building, and observations and evaluation of staff
  • Takes orders and follows them through until completed
  • Keeps building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and instructional areas, neat, clean, and operable at all times
  • Updates continuously working knowledge of systems and equipment in assigned building/area
  • Performs snow removal duties such as shoveling or plowing snow, spreading salt or ice remover, sanding walks, driveways, parking areas, steps, and other areas as needed
  • Required to be present if and when emergencies arise such as ice/snow storms, other inclement weather, etc.
  • Checks daily to ensure that all fire doors are working properly during the time of building utilization
  • Assists in maintaining proper heating and cooling conditions in compliance with energy management standards
  • Sweeps assigned classrooms daily and dusts furniture
  • Cleans corridors after school each day and during the day when their condition requires cleaning
  • As assigned, scrubs and disinfects washroom floors daily, and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily
  • As assigned, washes windows on both inside and outside at least twice a year
  • Keeps the building and grounds free of rubbish
  • Performs such yard keeping chores as grass cutting, tree and shrubbery trimming, and the like as necessary to maintain the school and respective grounds in a safe and attractive condition
  • Keeps all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation
  • Cleans all chalkboards and related trays daily or as needed
  • Makes minor repairs as appropriate
  • Reports minor repairs needed to the chief custodian promptly
  • Reports immediately to the chief custodian any damage to school or school property
  • Assumes responsibility for the opening and/or closing of the building each school day and for determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off
  • Assures that an adequate inventory of supplies and appropriate equipment are on hand and requisitions needed replacements from the chief custodian
  • Conducts an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep, and repair
  • Moves furniture and/or equipment as required for various activities as directed by the chief custodian or his/her designee
  • Complies with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste
  • Attends training schools/programs, specific or general, for custodians to learn, upgrade, or maintain necessary custodial skills/performance
  • Executes all essential functions of the job
  • Performs other duties as deemed necessary by the chief custodian (or his/her designee), building administrator, or chief of buildings and grounds

Equipment Uses hand tools of trade and related power equipment, including brooms, mops, floor cleaning and waxing machines, vacuum cleaners, snow blowers, shovels, power mower and hand tools. Wears appropriate safety gear, including masks. Must comply with all school district's materials safety rules. Travel Requirements Occasional travel between schools, or between schools and l office, may be required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to follow oral or written work orders from supervisor, and to coordinate work with principal and others.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English fluently.
  • Ability to describe orally or in writing cleaning, maintenance or repair problems as needed.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure.
  • Ability to work in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow.
  • Ability to work above ground from ladders and automatic lifts.
  • Ability to perform work according to standard procedures and schedule set forth by supervisor(s).
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
  • Works in standard office and school building environments.
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions.
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals, solvents and contaminated trash, grasses, pollens, etc.
Special Note: Interview may involve physical testing and a written examination. TEMPORARY POSITION: No Note: All temporary positions will end on June 30th. SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: All new state employees will be required to participate in the State of Delaware's Direct Deposit system.
