Job SummaryUnder the direction of the Maintenance of Operations Supervisor, perform cleaning and general maintenance work necessary to maintain a clean and orderly school and to do related work as required. •3 Hours Job Description / Essential Elements: CUSTODIAN Description of the Position Under the direction of the Maintenance of Operations Supervisor, perform cleaning and general maintenance work necessary to maintain a clean and orderly school and to do related work as required. Experience Some experience as custodian, janitor, housekeeper, or a position having similar duties is desirable. Abilities/Qualifications •Work with staff, students and others tactfully, courteously, and with good judgment. •Promote good staff relationships and good public relations within the school district. •Know cleaning methods and use and care of cleaning materials and equipment. •Know the requirements for maintaining school buildings and grounds in a safe, clean and orderly condition. •Maintain a schedule and perform duties in an efficient and capable manner. •Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. •Perform minor carpentry, plumbing, painting and electrical maintenance. •Keep required records and make requisitions for materials. •Possess honesty, initiative, dependability and loyalty. •Be cognizant of energy conservation. •Maintain good grooming and appropriate dress. Examples of Duties 1. Sweeps, scrubs, waxes and mops all types of floors and carpet areas, in accordance with recognized cleaning procedures. 2. Operates and maintains powered vacuum cleaners, scrubbers and carpet cleaners. 3. Washes, wipes and dusts windows, walls, furniture, shelves and blackboards. 4. Washes, scrubs and sanitizes restrooms, drinking fountains and food service areas, in accordance with recognized procedures. 5. Cleans and polishes metal fixtures. 6. Cleans lighting fixtures and changes incandescent and fluorescent lights, in accordance with energy conservation procedures. 7. Moves and arranges furniture and equipment. 8. Stores and dispenses classroom, restroom, foodstuffs and cleaning supplies. 9. Prepares facilities for indoor and outdoor school and community activities. 10. Operates heating, cooling and lighting controls and otherwise insures security of buildings, classrooms and school property. 11. Observes and reports needed maintenance and repair work. 12. Drives vehicle to pick up and deliver furniture and supplies. 13. Sweeps outside walkways and corridors. 14. May do grounds maintenance work. 15. May assist in major maintenance projects. 16. Does routine and minor plumbing, electrical, painting, carpentry and equipment maintenance work. 17. Picks up trash and empties trash containers. 18. May assist in routine warehouse and supply activities. 19. May train and direct the work of helpers. 20. Orders cleaning and maintenance supplies and keeps a sufficient inventory to complete assigned tasks. 21. Inspects buildings and grounds for fire, sanitary and safety hazards, and reports to supervisor. 22. Directs visitors and safeguards school property. 23. Performs any other duties as assigned. Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required: Valid California Driver's License Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance TB clearance Candidate who is selected for this classification will need to undergo a valid job-related strength test to demonstrate the ability to lift, push, pull, and carry objects.
