Honors students explore an academically intense curriculum through the lens of the culturally rich, ever-evolving city of Portland. Portland State's 49-acre campus is located in the heart of one of America's most vibrant centers of business, culture, business, and technology. We are recognized throughout the world for programs like Urban Planning, Social Work, and Environmental Studies that directly engage the community and aim our students towards the creation of a better, more sustainable world Position Summary As its chief executive and academic officer, the Dean works collaboratively both within University Honors College and across other colleges to create a unified vision for PSU's Interdisciplinary General Education initiatives. The Dean provides strategic leadership to advance its overall quality, reputation, stature, and aspirational goals and oversees a dedicated administrative staff. The Dean of University Honors College reports to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Dean is responsible for overseeing and managing the recruitment and retention of distinguished scholars and exceptional instructors as well as outstanding students; managing the allocation of UHC's fiscal, human, and capital resources, including space planning; setting direction and structure for curricular and scholarly efforts to foster and promote exceptional academic degree programs and research pursuits; planning, evaluating and overseeing academic programs; managing promotion and tenure guidelines for faculty; garnering support from university alumni and from internal and external stakeholders, including non-profit and for-profit sectors, government, faculty senate, and educational organizations; and leading energetic efforts to secure philanthropic support, cultivating development opportunities with a broad array of constituents. Minimum Qualifications Position requirements include:
  • Must be tenured at Portland State University at the rank of Professor upon hire.
  • An earned doctorate in one of the College's disciplines or a closely related discipline, from an accredited college or university.
  • A significant record of involvement in Honors education regionally and nationally.
  • Experience and evidence of teaching and curriculum development at an Honors education level.
  • Administrative experience in higher education.
  • Experience in strategic planning, academic leadership, and enrollment management.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills to promote collaboration and teamwork within the College and throughout the campus.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of academic, socio-economic, cultural, disabilities, and ethnic backgrounds of a diverse student body.
  • Knowledge about managing budgets and allocating resources with a high level of transparency and fairness.
  • Superior communication skills - the ability to articulate a compelling message to diverse audiences; clarity in written and oral presentation.
  • Demonstrated capacity to build and maintain academic programming, quality curricula development, and effective judicial process.
  • Ability to maintain the highest levels of integrity at all times.
  • Successful completion of a background check.
Preferred Qualifications
  • An understanding of general education in an urban public setting is preferred.

Environmental Stewardship Contributes to a culture of environmental stewardship, practices resource conservation, and actively works toward achieving long-term sustainability goals. Work Days/Hours Monday - Friday, 40 hours a week, schedule to be determined Total Compensation Range & Benefits Statement Salary is dependent on several factors, and new employees will typically start around the Q1 level to allow for later growth within the salary band. PSU has a structured process for determining starting compensation, taking into account years of related experience, applicable skills, knowledge and abilities, market parity, and internal equity. The starting annual salary for this position will be between $142,488 and $183,832.
