This position handles phone calls, prepares and maintains electronic patient charts, and assists faculty in providing effective and efficient patient care at the School of Dental Medicine. This role requires extensive experience with computer systems, patient records, and telephone communication. The dental assistant will work in an office environment and may also be called upon to assist as a clinical Dental Assistant when needed, including chair-side. This role benefits clinical patients, staff, students, residents, fellows, and faculty members alike. Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides, relays, and retrieves information to assist students, dentists, Team Leaders and faculty for patient management. Types form letters to physicians, private dentists, patients for faculty, residents and students as directed by Team Leaders. Responds to routine questions from patients and their families/staff/faculty and students. Assists patients in understanding clinic policies which impact their treatment.
- Assist directly in resolving problems pertaining to patient care, or when necessary, refer the problem to appropriate staff/faculty/resident/student/Team Leader. Broadcast pertinent announcements over the public address system. Inactivate patients sent to collection and types letters. Assist team leaders to ensure that students are utilizing their clinic time efficiently by providing info/record attendance.
- Assist in the operations of; Scheduling rotations. Scan information in patient charts. Sort mail for clinic personnel. Confirm all patient appointments electronically or by telephone. Maintain clinical photos and request forms Schedule patients for dental care. Identify and report alerts regarding pre-medication for patients. Process parking tickets when applicable. Assist in training of employees, students, residents, and faculty.
- Answers, screens, routes telephone inquiries from patients. Takes messages, transfers calls or locates party via public address system. Assist team leaders in ensuring that all patients are actively being treated, transferred, placed on recall or inactivated by performing computer entries as directed. Schedule emergency, screening, consult appointments for student/ faculty/ residents and patients.
- Utilizes clinical information system, kiosks, reports, and databases needed to manage patient care/student/faculty/clinical needs. Prepare, maintain, control distribution, retrieve, and file electronic patient charts. Provides verbal/written information on clinic operations regarding policies and procedures. Assist in gathering and reporting clinic compliance information.
Typical QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:
High school graduation or equivalent.One year (12 months) of experience:comparable to that performed at the Dental Clinic Clerk I level of this seriesORCertified Dental Assistant in a dental clinic facility, program, or in dentistry practice, if required by employing institutionPreferred Qualifications:
- This person must be an experienced dental assistant with knowledge of dentistry. Should possess; knowledge (and have experience) working chair-side, taking most types of dental radiographs, knowledge of dental procedures, techniques, terminology and practice.
- Computer skills are necessary to perform some of the clerical duties. In addition, this staff person must demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate and work harmoniously with patients, parents, staff, students and faculty.
- This position requires a high degree of interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate effectively in person and by telephone.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of dental techniques, terminology and practice.
