To perform a variety of general certified sworn law enforcement functions consisting of patrol, court services, investigations, arrest, apprehension, supervision, and control of inmates, and to perform related work as required in McLennan County. Assignments may include rotating shift schedules in any of the divisions of the McLennan County Sheriff's Office. Patrol Duties
* Provides the public in McLennan County with immediate response to emergencies and situations that require the presence of a peace officer.
* Performs patrol duties by patrolling rural areas, ensuring buildings and residences are secure and assisting other departments and agencies as needed.
* Responds to emergency calls, such as robberies, burglaries, kidnappings, assaults, and murders; and practices safety procedures in answering and responding to calls.
* Enforces traffic laws and arrests or issues summons to traffic law violators; reports unsafe road conditions; directs the flow of traffic when required; investigates traffic accidents.
* Serves warrants, capias, court orders and other legal processes; locates and arrests persons wanted on warrants or court orders.
* Protects the crime scene, gathers and preserves matters of evidence, takes and records testimony; directs and coordinates activities on-site until relieved by a superior officer; assists detectives in specialized investigations.
* Testifies in state, federal, and municipal courts concerning investigative work performed.
* Prepare and preserve evidence in accordance with directives to maintain chain of custody.
* Conducts investigations of complaints, crimes, and disturbances; interviews witnesses; interrogates suspects; collects, preserves, and reports on evidence.
* Prepares reports and keeps records of all activities in accordance with established policy and procedures.
* Assesses situations, secures scene, and restores order including the use of restraints and force where appropriate up to and including deadly force.
* Transports mentally ill patients to hospital and guards' prisoners when needed.
* Provides accurate and clear law enforcement information to the public, secures people or property, participates in community policing and awareness projects, conducts presentations.
* Regular attendance and timeliness are required
Courthouse/Court Security Duties
* Preserves order among spectators and participants in court proceedings; calls participants to the stand; secures weapons and drugs submitted as evidence in court trials and processes court documents; provides information to the public and to participants at proceedings; acts as a liaison for jurors in court sessions and deliberations; arranges court and jury transportation or jury sequestering as needed; takes custody of individuals committed by the judge; searches prisoners for weapons and contraband and inventories personal belongings; sounds and/or responds to emergency alarms.
* Operates equipment for the detection of weapons and contraband; arrests criminal violators on courthouse premises.
* Enforces orders of the court including warrants of arrest; conducts investigations for apprehension of felony suspects; seizes real and personal property by court order; executes detention orders for mentally disabled persons; serves and enforces domestic orders; and serves civil process.
* Ensures the safety and security of the Courthouse staff and visitors.
* Transports prisoners to and from court, hospitals, or correctional facilities as required, and guards' prisoners when at trial.
* Regular attendance and timeliness are required
EDUCATION:
* High School Diploma or GED (Required).
* Associate degree in criminal justice, criminology, law, or related field (Preferred).
REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS:
* Current and valid Texas driver's license (Class C) and safe driving record
* TCOLE Peace Officer License (must not be on probationary status for disciplinary reasons)

* A felony conviction or felony deferred adjudication against the laws of this state, another state, or the United States
* Conviction including court-ordered community supervision or probation for any criminal offense above the grade of Class B Misdemeanor, or a Class B Misdemeanor within the last ten (10) years.
* Arrested for DWI or DUI in the past ten (10) years.
* Currently under indictment for any criminal offense
* Sold or manufactured any illegal drugs.
* Conviction, guilty plea, or probation for any family violence offense
* A dishonorable discharge from any military service/armed forces of the United States

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: McLennan County will conduct background checks on new hires that will include a criminal background check related to convictions and deferred adjudications in the past ten years and may include credit reports, motor vehicle records, employment records, and educational attainment. A conviction or deferred adjudication is not an automatic bar to employment. Each case is considered individually.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Split between indoor / outdoor activity. Significant contact with the public, persons accused or convicted of crimes, law enforcement and courthouse personnel. Work may involve life-threatening situations, extensive local and possible out- of-town driving.
PHYSICAL DEMAND REQUIREMENTS: Intermittent performance of extremely physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, running, and climbing. May involve lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling. Must be able to exert up to 150 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects such as in the event of chasing and subduing a law violator resisting control. Tasks may also involve standing, sitting, or walking for long periods. Visual perception and discrimination are required as well as being able to isolate and distinguish critical sounds, possibly under various conditions to include dark or crowded environments.
