The position exercises independent judgment in dealing with dangerous or unusual situations while exercising safe practices and procedures. Works under stressful, high-risk conditions. The Deputy Sheriff may be assigned to the Patrol Division, Investigations Division, Administrative Division, or other based on the needs of the agency. Reports to the assigned division supervisor(s). Working schedule is dependent on the division assigned. Essential Job Functions
- May be assigned a district in a patrol car on assignment for the purpose of observing the area for possible criminal activity or other conditions that could endanger public safety, investigating complaints, and enforcing laws; maintains high visibility
- Apprehends, arrests, and detains criminal suspects and law violators when necessary; follows proper procedures when making arrests. Enforces all Federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Enforces traffic law.
- Responds to emergency calls, such as robberies, burglaries, kidnapping, assaults, and murders; and practices safety procedures in answering and responding to calls
- Investigates crimes and accidents, interviews witnesses, complaints, and victims; and gathers physical evidence and preserves for court; conducts follow up investigations as needed
- Serves warrants, summonses, subpoenas, civil, and other official documents
- Prepares written records as prescribed by the agency, serves as witness in court and provides evident in court as required.
- Works under stressful, high-risk conditions, and makes decisions which may be centered around life-or-death situations in accordance with law and agency policy.
- Performs other duties of a similar nature or level as required by the agency

- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- Valid Driver's License
- Certified or eligible to be certified as a Law Enforcement Officer through the ND Post Board

- Must successfully pass a pre-employment background investigation, and successfully complete the agency Field Training Program
