Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, performs law enforcement and related services to safe guard the lives, property and constitutional rights of citizens in the County; responds to crime and accident scenes, emergency situations and other requests for assistance; detects, apprehends and arrests criminals; enforces State and Federal laws and County ordinances; performs a variety of specialized duties as assigned.DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:This is the entry level class in the Deputy Sheriff series. Deputy Sheriff incumbents are sworn law enforcement officers, assigned patrol, bailiff, transportation or investigation duties, and many participate in specialized programs such as the Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) and Imperial County Sheriff's Underwater Recovery Team (ICSURT). Incumbents assigned to the Safety Boating Unit patrol by vessel and motor vehicle to assure that the public utilizes waterways in a safe and responsible manner, and incumbents are knowledgeable in small vessel operation. This classification differs from Senior Deputy Sheriff in that incumbents perform the full scope of law enforcement tasks consistent with the entry level.Graduation from high school or GED and successful completion of a California P.O.S.T. Basic Law Enforcement Academy; possession of a valid Certificate of Completion or possess a current California POST Requalification Certificate.POST Certificate, valid California Driver's License, and valid First Aid/CPR certificate.A valid driver's license may be required at the time of appointment and employees may also be required to drive their own vehicle and provide proof of liability insurance as per Vehicle Code VC § 160020.
