Our Detention Aides positions are established with a Bona Fide Requirement: Occupational Qualification requiring that the candidate be of the same gender as the resident unit. Due to the direct custodial care and the nature of the interaction required in these positions, candidates are eligible to compete for this particular vacancy. These are non-merit positions. Work involves exercising appropriate behavior management techniques in the enforcement of rules and regulations in a secure facility at the front desk or in the unit, as well as informal individual and group counseling. Salary: $20.00 Hourly Applicants must be available to work two, eight-hour shifts per week. Our Detention Aides cover any shifts: 6 a.m. - 2 p.m.; 2p.m. - 10 p.m. or 10 p.m. - 6 a.m. Holiday and weekend availability is required. Examples of Duties This is responsible work in the direct care and supervision of juveniles placed within a detention facility. An employee in this position is responsible for the safety, personal conduct, care and supervision of juveniles during a work shift. The employee is expected to exercise limited judgment and discretion in the performance of duties in accordance with detention policies and procedures. An employee in this class works under the general supervision of a higher level Detention Juvenile Officer or Chief Juvenile Officer. Serve as a youth supervisor, with responsibility for the safety, personal conduct and care of juveniles during a shift. NOTE: This job class title is considered an essential position for coverage purposes. Essential Employee Definition: Essential employee-An employee who is indispensable to the emergency service function of his or her employing agency or department and is required to assist the department or agency in meeting policy requirements and/or its operational needs. Serve as a youth supervisor, with responsibility for the safety, personal conduct and care of juveniles during a shift. Interacts with juvenile officer or other supervisor to report the behavior and activities of a juvenile during an assigned shift. Records and tracks medication provided to the juveniles in detention. Prepares reports regarding each juvenile's adjustment and progress. Coordinates and supervises juvenile work assignments and recreation activities. Provides information regarding juvenile's progress to visiting parents or guardians as requested. Implement detention center programming. Manage youth who exhibit moderate to high risk behaviors including but not limited to chemical dependency, mental illness, trauma, mental health disabilities, physical disabilities, sex offenses, SOGIE, physical ailments, medical needs, language and cultural differences, Entry of required data into Missouri's electronic data collection system. Performs Intake assessments and processing of in custody juveniles. Advises the juvenile of their rights while in detention. Provide secure and safe transportation of juveniles to court or other approved activity. Prepared to work weekends, holidays, overnights, Conducts juvenile assessments when appropriate. Provide drug testing of juvenile's when required. Unit Leader: Treats all juveniles within their constitutional rights and those specified by the Juvenile Code. Observes residents' behaviors and attitudes; maintains a daily log of occurrences and the general behavior of residents. Consults with other staff, including the juvenile's Delinquency Services Deputy Juvenile Officer, regarding the juvenile's physical or emotional needs; performs crisis intervention as needed; remains alert to suicide possibilities. Maintains order and discipline among residents; escorts residents to meals and other programmed activities; operates security equipment such as keys, automated door controls, paging systems, closed circuit television systems, etc. Conducts room, unit and/or body searches of residents. Provides first aid (immediate care and treatment) to individuals who are injured or ill; dispenses medication to residents as directed by medical personnel. Assists Detention Administration with the development of special programs for juveniles who can not function in regular programs. Teaches personal hygiene to the juveniles; supervises their daily showering. Physically restrains residents when necessary; intercedes in physical altercations between residents and residents and staff. This position is considered part of essential staffing and schedule changes without notice may occur. - High school education, GED, or equivalent with one year of previous experience in the direct care and interaction with children such as YMCA, day care, schools, recreational facilities, or residential care programs.

Additional Information All applicants conditionally offered a permanent part-time, full-time, term or on-call position will be required to submit to a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory. The cost of screening will be bourne by the County.
