DescriptionThe Canadian County Juvenile Detention Center is housed inside the Gary E. Miller Children's Justice Center. It serves as a safe and secure holding facility for juveniles who have been arrested and are waiting to proceed through the court process or who have not yet been placed. The detention center is not a treatment facility, but mental health programs and trainings inform staff in providing trauma-informed care. A very strict and structured but fair philosophy helps residents see the benefits of staying out of trouble with the law, staying off drugs, and staying in school.Description of duties and responsibilities: Supervises residents, keeping them in close proximity and in visual and auditory contact at all times. Supervises the chores of each resident and ensures that the detention facility is properly maintained. Provides input to shift supervisor regarding daily activities and incidents related to residents. Assures that residents practice proper personal hygiene. Assures that residents maintain their schedule. Develops a thorough understanding of all security and emergency procedures. Participates in shift change and ensures that all pertinent information is passed on. Follows all detention/sanction policies and procedures. Performs housekeeping duties in defined areas and ensures that the facility is clean. Ensures that the shift supervisor is aware of all pertinent information that affects the health and well-being of residents and the safety and security of the facility. Reports any maintenance problems to the shift supervisor. Is responsible for ensuring that the physical and emotional needs of the residents are met on their shift, within the defined parameters of the detention center. Performs other duties as directed by the shift supervisor or program coordinator. Must wear a county-issued shirt. Comes to work on a regular full-time basis. Attends scheduled staff meetings and training.Qualifications for the position: Must be at least 21 years of age with a high school diploma or equivalent. Must pass a background check.Supervisory relationships: Is under the direct supervision of the shift supervisor or the program coordinator.Skills and knowledge required: The individual must be physically able to restrain a juvenile should it become necessary, have adequate visual and auditory skills to supervise residents, be physically able to stand on his/her feet for an entire eight-hour shift, and have skills necessary to operate the security devices in a safe and competent manner.Prior experience required: NonePersonal qualities: Individual should have sufficient interpersonal skills to work closely with peers and residents.Amount of travel and special conditions or requirements:Some travel may be required in carrying out duties and trainingHours per week: Must be able to work a variable and flexible schedule, must be able to come in on short notice if necessary, and must be able to work hours other than a regularly scheduled shift.EEO: An Equal Opportunity EmployerYou may apply online at: RequirementsMust be at least 21 years of age with a high school diploma or equivalent.Must pass a background check and drug and alcohol screening.
