Job DescriptionJob Overview:We are seeking a skilled Fiber Engineer for a 6-month contract (with the potential to extend) to support FTTH (Fiber to the Home) design for five bases. The successful candidate will perform engineering work using FOND or KMZ desktop design tools, with a focus on neighborhood fiber deployments (no middle mile). This is a remote position with 25% travel to various project sites. The Fiber Engineer will work closely with A&E and construction vendors, determining standards for fiber counts, splitter locations, and designing the optimal network infrastructure. You will also be responsible for equipment specifications, vendor research, and providing documentation for project approval. This role offers the chance to contribute to high-impact fiber projects and collaborate with industry leaders. Key Responsibilities:
- Perform FTTH engineering for five bases using FOND or KMZ desktop design tools.
- Design fiber networks for neighborhoods (no middle mile) including equipment specifications and vendor selection (fiber, splitters, cabinets, hand holes, pedestals, etc.).
- Determine and document standards for fiber counts, segmenting, and splitter locations.
- Research and specify equipment and parts, obtaining quotes from multiple vendors.
- Ensure compliance with ISP requirements and base approvals for designs such as hand holes and other key elements.
- Develop splicing plans and support the design of splicing techniques, considering loss characteristics for cascaded splitter designs.
- Support the use of aerial fiber in neighborhoods, and consider options for middle mile applications.
- Document all designs and standards in KMZ for submission to A&E and construction vendors.
- Maintain an inventory of fiber, hand holes, splicing points, and other key infrastructure elements in KMZ.
- Assist with Scope of Work (SOW) development for engineering and construction efforts.
- Travel to project sites as needed (up to 25%).
Requirements:
- Proven experience in FTTH (Fiber to the Home) design, with hands-on expertise in FOND or KMZ desktop design tools.
- Strong understanding of fiber counts, splitter locations, equipment specifications, and fiber optic splicing.
- Experience researching vendors and obtaining quotes for fiber infrastructure components such as splitters, cabinets, hand holes, pedestals, and fiber cables.
- Familiarity with aerial fiber design and installation practices in neighborhoods.
- Excellent documentation skills, including the ability to prepare KMZ files and standard information for submission to A&E and construction teams.
- Strong knowledge of splicing techniques and loss characteristics, with the ability to develop splicing plans.
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines while managing multiple projects.
- Must be willing to travel up to 25% of the time to various project sites.
- Experience in telecom infrastructure and an understanding of ISP requirements is preferred.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working on fiber projects for telecom providers.
- Familiarity with base approvals and working in highly regulated environments.
- Knowledge of aerial fiber installation and middle mile design options.
